Excerpt from Essays Political and Biographical MY father told me once that one of his earliest recol lections was of a visit to the new house which my grand father had bought at Ealing. He must have been about four or five years old at the time, and, to a child born in the neighbourhood of Lincoln's Inn, the small house standing in green fields with the purple wisteria climb ing up over one side appeared an earthly paradise. The deep meaning of the occasion was enhanced by my grandfather's first great confidence. He told his little son that although my grandmother was aware of the purchase, and that the house was being made ready for occupation, she did not know that a certain room on the ground floor with a window on the garden was being made into a boudoir for her use. My father, exhorted to preserve the utmost secrecy, was taken into this room and consulted as to the choice of a paper. He did not know till long afterwards that the country house (for Ealing was in the country then) had been bought because he was so delicate a child that my grandparents feared they would not rear him in the London atmosphere. Thirty years later, when I first remember. The place, London had crept along the Uxbridge Road almost as far as Acton, and the Common was already surrounded with buildings. Now, of course, it is London all the way, and the terminus of the District Railway. But when first I knew it my grandfather's place was perhaps much the same as it had been in my father's childhood. And yet the coming year shall pass, in its first visit, over prisons, and gibbets, and penal settlements, and battle-fields on which the festering (lead moulder unburied; it will see the shotted gun and the spear and the crease and the mur dering tomahawk, slaves in their huts, and captives in their dungeons. It will look down on uncouth idols in their temples; worshippers of the false prophet in their mosques; the Papist in his confessional; the Puseyite in his stone allegory; and on much idle and bitter controversy among those holders of the true faith whose proper work is the conversion of the world. But the years shall pass, and a change shall come: the sacrifice on Calvary was not offered up in vain, nor in vain bath the adorable Saviour conquered, and ascended to reign as King and Lord over the nations. The kingdoms shall become his kingdoms, the people his people. The morning rises slowly and in clouds, but the dawn has broken and it shall shine forth more and more, until the twilight shadows shall have dispersed and the sulphurous fogs shall have dissipated, and all shall be peace and gladness amid the blaze of the perfect day. S., of your house exclusively; not with any view to further emolument, but as an acknowledgment of the services which you have already rendered me; namely, first, in having brought together so widely scattered a collection - a difficulty which in my own hands by too painful an experience I had found from nervous depression to be absolutely insurmountable; secondly, in having made me a participator in the pecuniary profits of the American edition, without solicitation or the shadow of any expectation on my part, without any legal claim that I could plead, or equitable warrant in established usage, solely and merely upon your own spontaneous motion. Excerpt from Biographical, Literary, and Philosophical Essays By the principles of our undertaking, we are pledged not to advance any opinions on the grand controversy be tween the religious establishment of our country and the dissenters from its communion - or more precisely, we are engaged to avoid discussing the abstract propriety of an establishment, and also the propriety of that form of it now existing in the country. These are ques tions, it is true, quite distinct from the conduct of the established church, or any of its distinguished members, as political agents in the transactions of a history. Viewed in this light, their operations, their influence, their vir tues, or their vices, are just as fair subjects of observation as those of any other of the agents, involved in our na tional history. But it is not certain that we can exercise our right to this undoubted extent without giving consider able off'ence. Excerpt from Essays Political and Biographical The reception accorded to the Studies in Biography of the late Sir Spencer Walpole encourages the hope that a new volume of essays by the same distinguished author may be read with interest. With two exceptions they are reproduced from the Edinburgh Review, and acknowledgments are due to Messrs. Longman for their kindness in permitting the publication. Substantially they are reprinted in their original form, those passages only having been omitted which contain direct criticism of the books under review, and are not, therefore, of permanent interest. Of the other two essays, one, that on Crabbe, was delivered as a lecture to the East Anglian Society; and the other, a sketch of Mr. Frank Buckland, appeared in Macmillan's Magazine. I have to thank Messrs. Macmillan for permitting me to republish this appreciation of the kind-hearted naturalist by a kindred spirit; and I have also to thank Mr. Arthur Elliot for his courtesy in conveying to me the permission of Grillion's Club for the reproduction in the frontispiece of Mr. Hugh Riviere's admirable portrait of the author. The tale is one of deep interest, and presents a faithful picture \of the progress and consequences of Vice, and will, if rightly understood, exert an important and beneficial influence upon the youthful mind, in pro vmg how near to the indulgence of innocent enjoyments, is the barrier that separates it from the first steps of vice. The tale is told with an unpretending and delicate beauty. Even in those passages where it is necessary to portray the state of feeling and the power of temptation, the au thor has preserved a purity of style and description, very admirable None, but the fastidious whose opinion is usually worth nothing at all can find any fault with either the contents or the way in which it is got up. There are some passages of extraordinary power, and of a highly dramatic character. Witness the interview be tween Margaret and her repentant andfunhappy brother. In a very judicious and brief introduction - 1 the pulisher sets forth his opinion - one, by the bye, which we wish he could disseminate through the New York community, viz.: that good editions at reasonable prices are always cheaper than common ones. We have seen few neater works, as regards typography and binding, turned out from New York. We have not yet seen the work advertized in this city. We wish it may have an extended circulation, for the interest it excites and the moral it enforces. If our opportunity would allow, our readers should have an extract. Boston Atlas.
