Come uomo di scienza, egli considera l’affermazione che quello della Bibbia è l’unico vero Dio una bestemmia nei confronti di Colui che gli uomini di buona fede, da Pitagora e Platone a Spinoza e Einstein, hanno da sempre identificato con l’Intelligenza dell’Universo e l’Armonia del Mondo. Come cittadino, afferma che il Cristianesimo ha costituito non la molla del pensiero democratico e scientifico europeo, bensì il freno che ne ha gravemente soffocato lo sviluppo civile e morale, e ritiene che l’anticlericalismo sia oggi più una difesa della laicità dello Stato che un attacco alla religione della Chiesa. Come autore, infine, legge l’Antico e il Nuovo Testamento e le successive elaborazioni dogmatiche della Chiesa per svelarne, con una critica tanto serrata quanto avvincente, non soltanto le incongruenze logiche ma anche le infondatezze storiche, dando alla Ragione ciò che è della Ragione e facendo emergere dai testi la Verità: ovvero, dice Odifreddi, che «Mosè, Gesù e il Papa sono nudi».
