The wars of the fourteenth-century English kings with France and Scotland resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of men involved in warfare on land and sea. This book draws upon new research to identify and analyze these soldiers at all social levels in the specific context of the county of Essex. New approaches to the history of the later Middle Ages allow important evidence of military service to be correlated with the rich documentary material stemming from landholding, taxation, administration and other aspects of economic and social life. Significant comparisons can then be made: increased demands for taxation and for shipping from maritime communities, for example, cast light on the impact of war upon the 'Home Front'. The uprising of 1381 is considered as the consequence of the intensive militarization of the south and southeast coast of England and the consequent cost to taxpayers. Before the First World War, Essex was a very different county from that which we know today. The economy was largely based on agriculture, and its people rarely travelled beyond its borders, or even out of their towns or villages. The war opened up a whole new world for the people of Essex. Men from the county enlisted in Kitchener's Army and travelled abroad, and many troops came into the camps and barracks which sprang up around the countryside. Some of these men came from all points of the British Empire and had enlisted to fight for the mother country. Essex was a key area during the war. Situated on the east coast, it was thought that the enemy could potentially use it as a site for invasion, so many defences were set up all round the county. Essex was subjected to great danger and harsh times by the enemy in the form of air raids from Zeppelins, and later, from the more potent aeroplane attacks. This well-illustrated and informative book sets out the experiences of the county and its inhabitants against what was happening in the broader theatre of war. 10th Essex was formed at Warley in September 1914, a battalion of Kitchener s Second New Army. It was allocated to the 53rd Brigade of the 18th (Eastern) Division, a division that was to become one of the best in the BEF. For the first two years of its existence the division was commanded by Maj-Gen Ivor Maxse, a general of high reputation and ability. The 10th Essex remained in the same brigade throughout the war. It arrived in France at the end of July 1915 and for the first year it experienced a relatively uneventful war with no major actions. Its first significant battle was on the opening day of the Somme at Monteauban when the division was one of the few to take its objectives, and from then on the battalion was involved in more than twenty-five actions before the war came to an end. The chronological list of these engagements is featured at the end of the book. By the end of the war 227 officers and 5,274 other ranks had served in the battalion and of these 1103 died. This is a good history, written in an informal style, with plenty of detail; unfortunately there is no index nor is there a Roll of Honour nor list of awards. One point needs to be corrected: at the beginning of chapter XIV reference is made to a cavalry action in 1914 on Mont des Cats, stating, incorrectly, that one of the Kaiser s sons was killed in that action. The dead man was in fact Prince Max of Hesse
