The 'hacienda' system, implanted throughout Spanish America during the colonial period, generated structures that ensured the creation of two social classes. Inheritors of the 'hacienda', born of Spanish parents, and practitioners of Catholicism, came to be the ' hacienda' elite. They fostered independence of the colonies from, Spain and were the founders of the recently created Republics. The hacienda elite has been trying to maintain an absolute monopoly of power on the Political and economic realms, restraining the majority of the population from access to positions of authority and means of production. Due to a failure in the socialisation process, the dominated class became aware of the structural barriers and entered into armed conflict with the dominating class. The conflicting parties entered into armed confrontation for they were disputing, in Colombia the control over the political realm, and in Guatemala over the means of production, principally land. Armed conflict deeply deteriorated the human rights situation in both countries. Gross human violations became a systematic practice carried out mainly by the national security forces, but also by the various opposition groups. For more than thirty-six years Guatemala experienced a civil war that left more than 200,000 victims dead. Colombia is still undergoing an internal armed confrontation. It is the belief of the author that a national reconciliation process has the capacity to terminate the armed confrontation, provide the means for the society to come to terms with the painful past and disempower the ' hacienda' elite so as to redistribute political and economic power in a more egalitarian way.
