Au fil des publications, la figure de Mikhaïl Bakhtine (1895-1975) apparaît comme l'une des plus fascinantes et des plus énigmatiques de la culture européenne du milieu du XXe siècle. On peut en effet distinguer, comme Tzvetan Todorov dans sa présentation, plusieurs Bakhtine : après le critique du formalisme régnant, le Bakhtine phénoménologue, auteur d'un tout premier livre sur la relation entre l'auteur et son héros ; le Bakhtine sociologue et marxiste de la fin des années vingt, qui apparaît dans les complexes Problèmes de la poétique de Dostoïevski ; le Bakhtine des années trente, marquées par le Rabelais et les grandes explorations culturelles dans le domaine des fêtes populaires, du carnaval, de l'histoire du rire ; le Bakhtine "synthétique" des derniers écrits, sans parler de bien d'autres possibles. Les textes ici retenus proviennent de trois moments importants de cette riche carrière et permettent de l'éclairer. Des extraits d'abord d'un livre interrompu en 1922, probablement sa première grande oeuvre, description phénoménologique de l'acte de création. Le texte suivant, écrit entre 1936 et 1938, date du moment où l'auteur travaillait à un livre sur Goethe, qui a disparu. Les derniers enfin jalonnent la période finale, réflexions sur "les genres du discours", l'état des études littéraires et tous les sujets qui ont intéressé Bakhtine dans son parcours mouvementé.

Nous nous sommes donné comme objectif d'étudier dans cette thèse le procès de création superviellienne qui se définit d'abord comme une appropriation ludique du passé faisant du texte l'espace d'un travail sur les représentations collectives. La récriture distancée du discours collectif est de fait nécessaire à l'émergence de la parole du sujet, située au point de croisement entre le lieu commun et le désir singulier qui se cristallise dans l'image poétique. Le faire poétique superviellien met par ailleurs en scène l'expérience radicale d'une énonciation dont le caractère dialogique entame les frontières conventionnelles entre le sujet et l'objet, entre le je et le tu. Le poème théâtralise en effet la parole du sujet qui ne peut s'appréhender qu'en inscrivant l'Autre dans la configuration énonciative. Cette instance fondamentale peut s'incarner dans la figure du sujet-lecteur, double antinomique du sujet-scripteur, mettant en débat, par le mouvement réflexif de sa parole, le discours du créateur. Les manuscrits de Jules Supervielle nous font ainsi assister à l'inconnu du mécanisme de la production littéraire. L'énonciation poétique superviellienne ouvre à cet égard la voie secrète qui permet d'accéder aux " sentiers de la création ", voie que devra alors emprunter le lecteur, qui apparaît comme un élément déterminant du texte superviellien, lui donnant existence et sens, étant en effet impliqué dans la configuration énonciative. Ce travail nous conduit ainsi au cœur de la scène poïétique superviellienne qui se définit à cet égard comme une dynamique traversée par une énonciation en acte.

Contrary to what might be expected from a philosophical novel, Sterne and Diderot do not impose their own views upon the reader. The author’s voice is but one amongst many others. Margaux Whiskin’s argument hinges on Bakhtinian dialogism, which can be defined as the presence of interacting voices and views. In Tristram Shandy and Jacques le fataliste, dialogism occurs through the narrative structure allowing for the confrontation of the contradictory discourses in the philosophical debates, and enabling them to engage in dialogue, instead of establishing the authorial voice as the sole valid discourse in the text. Through those contradictions, the philosophical content takes on a different form, that of a refusal of systematic discourse. Sterne and Diderot do not offer a solution to the various questions debated in their novels. However, they do offer a philosophical approach whereby the confrontation of contradictory ideas creates a dynamic for the pursuit of truth. By engaging in dialogue and constantly opening questions where there is no single right answer, Sterne and Diderot redirect the focus of the reader and invite him to perceive truth not as a destination to be reached, or as a closed conclusion, but as being present in the quest itself, in the ongoing dialogues and debates.
