Welfare Regimes And The Experience Of Unemployment In Europe written by Duncan Gallie and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-05-25 with Political Science categories.

The book is the first major study to examine the implications of differences in welfare regimes for the experience of unemployment in Europe. It is concerned with three central questions about the way such regimes affect the experience of unemployment. The first is how far they protect the quality of life of unemployed people with respect to living standards and the experience of financial hardship. The second is their role in mediating the impact of unemployment on the individual's longer-term position in the labour market, addressing the issue of how far they help to prevent progressive marginalization from the employment structure as a result of motivational change, skill loss or the growth of discriminatory barriers. The third is how far such regimes mediate the impact of unemployment on social integration in the community, for instance with respect to the maintenance (or rupture) of social networks and the degree of psychological distress experienced by the unemployed. The book is the product of a major cross-cultural research programme, funded by the European Union (TSER), bringing together teams from eight countries. The emphasis has been on rigorous comparison rather than the all-too-frequent separate country analyses, which usually provide data which differs in format from one country to another. In addition to a systematic comparison of national data sources, it has been able to make use of a new important data source (the European Community Household Panel) produced by Eurostat which provides directly comparable information for all EU countries. The study shows that institutional and cultural differences have vital implications for the experience of unemployment. While welfare policies affect in an important way the pervasiveness of poverty, it is above all the patterns of family structure and the culture of sociability in a society that affect vulnerability to social isolation. The book concludes by developing a new perspective for understanding the risk of social exclusion.

The Family Business written by Fred Neubauer and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-27 with Business & Economics categories.

The family business has a far reaching influence on economies throughout the world. No other type of business has driven economic development in the same way and today, in almost all countries, family businesses including such giants as Ford, Levi Strauss, L'Oréal and Ferrero are the source of more than half of the Gross National Product (GNP) and employment. As a result of their prominence the question of how they are governed, controlled and accounted for is crucial not only for the owning families, but also for the societies in which these companies operate. The Family Business considers: · How to define a family-controlled business and the significance of this form of privately-held enterprise. · Governance systems in the context of the family business. · How a board of outsiders can add value to the typical family business. · How to handle the classical tensions between family and board and between family and management on the other. · How to gain effective and efficient control at the highest level. The answer to these questions and others is given by providing a large number of examples of internationally active family businesses and from the authors teaching and research into this area. Sustainability is the key concern to the family business and this book breaks new ground in showing how they can successfully live on to the next generation.

Unbending Gender written by Joan Williams and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-09-13 with Law categories.

In Unbending Gender, Joan Williams takes a hard look at the state of feminism in America. Concerned by what she finds--young women who flatly refuse to identify themselves as feminists and working-class and minority women who feel the movement hasn't addressed the issues that dominate their daily lives--she outlines a new vision of feminism that calls for workplaces focused on the needs of families and, in divorce cases, recognition of the value of family work and its impact on women's earning power.Williams shows that workplaces are designed around men's bodies and life patterns in ways that discriminate against women, and that the work/family system that results is terrible for men, worse for women, and worst of all for children. She proposes a set of practical policies and legal initiatives to reorganize the two realms of work in employment and households--so that men and women can lead healthier and more productive personal and work lives. Williams introduces a new 'reconstructive' feminism that places class, race, and gender conflicts among women at center stage. Her solution is an inclusive, family-friendly feminism that supports both mothers and fathers as caregivers and as workers.

Sources Of Medical Technology written by Institute of Medicine and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-01-01 with Medical categories.

Evidence suggests that medical innovation is becoming increasingly dependent on interdisciplinary research and on the crossing of institutional boundaries. This volume focuses on the conditions governing the supply of new medical technologies and suggest that the boundaries between disciplines, institutions, and the private and public sectors have been redrawn and reshaped. Individual essays explore the nature, organization, and management of interdisciplinary R&D in medicine; the introduction into clinical practice of the laser, endoscopic innovations, cochlear implantation, cardiovascular imaging technologies, and synthetic insulin; the division of innovating labor in biotechnology; the government- industry-university interface; perspectives on industrial R&D management; and the growing intertwining of the public and proprietary in medical technology.
