Ambas intenciones están construidas sobre el suelo firme de la lectura, la comprensión y el comentario filosóficos, sobre todo para el caso de Buenaventura, y sobre la base firme de la literatura comparada, para el caso de Dante Alighieri. El Dante, 700 años de su despedida del mundo de los mortales se cumplen en septiembre del año 2021. Mismo año en que este libro, seguramente, saldrá a la luz. No haría falta confesar —aunque decir esto es hacerlo— que dedicar tres de los capítulos de esta obra a su vida y trabajo también es un modo de celebrar el milagro de su paso corpóreo por el mundo de los terrestres. Digo paso corpóreo porque su espíritu pervive aún y pervivirá para siempre en nosotros por obra de su imaginación y sus ideas. Cosa que también festejamos. Todo este libro, de hecho, es una celebración de la ratio y la imago medievales. El Seráfico Buenaventura viajó o peregrinó por las seis alas del serafín hasta el pleno Aleluya, las seis alas que significan iluminaciones escalonadas o graduadas; análogamente, Dante navegó por los estados quintaesenciales del hombre: el infierno, el purgatorio y el paraíso; y el premio de esa navegación también es la gloria. [...] Como tiempo, el Renacimiento va desde (las bisagras) Dante Alighieri y Giotto di Bondone hasta el siglo xviii, aunque esto, todavía, es motivo de discusión. El va y el hasta, además, se aplica al espacio geográfico donde tuvo lugar y en donde produjo sus frutos: Italia, Alemania, España, Francia, Inglaterra, Bélgica, Suiza, Holanda, Polonia, Rusia, y de algunos de estos, mezclado con el Gótico, por poner un ejemplo de mezcla, a otros espacios del globo. Y lo renacentista... ¿En qué consiste dicho carácter del espíritu humano al que podemos llamar renacentista?, ¿en qué consiste ser renacentista? Sería una petulancia dar una definición terminada en un texto tan breve como este, pero sí menciono algunos de los aspectos, propiedades o atributos de la unidad llamada ser renacentista, espíritu renacentista: para mí es inalienable la búsqueda de totalidad del conocimiento, la procura de armonía del saber científico, con el artístico y el práctico; también, el amor a la belleza formal y a la belleza viva que son redivivas en el arte, la literatura, la ciencia, la arquitectura y la ingeniería, y de aquí sus visitaciones al cultivo de las ideas en las Grecia y Roma clásicas (visitaciones que son revisitaciones, pues antes las iniciaron los hombres de la Edad Media); asimismo, la elevación y centralidad del ser humano en tanto que creador, que es una forma de divinización, gracias a la correspondencia entre microcosmos y macrocosmos, entre el hombre y el universo —aunque podría verse también por la otra dirección: la humanización de lo sublime, de lo divino. En lo que se puede descubrir una de las influencias que el Renacimiento tuvo en el artista romántico William Blake—. De esta última característica de lo renacentista deriva otra: la fe, la esperanza o la confianza en poder llevar a cabo, con el suficiente trabajo, cualquier empresa del conocimiento lógico, estético y práctico. [...] [A]sí como decimos que somos románticos cuando nuestra voluntad es imaginal, inventiva, tentadora, metafísica, exaltada, intensa, reflexiva y autoconsciente hasta lo metapsicológico, así, análogamente, ¿podemos afirmar que somos renacentistas cuando somos racionalmente universales?, ¿o cuando amamos la belleza arquetipal que cobra vida en las obras?, ¿o cuando nos hacemos alumnos de los clásicos griegos y romanos?, ¿o al encarnar a Dios —muchos románticos dirían al encarnar al Genio—? Para lograr tal propósito, procedemos, ante todo, a precisar, sistematizar y explicar las principales tesis con las que nuestro autor estructura su singular Estética, recopilando para ello, entre sus múltiples y heterogéneos escritos, y comparando entre sí los textos mediante los cuales fundamenta sus propuestas estéticas: tales análisis comparativos internos (verificados en el seno del opus bonaventuriano en su conjunto) nos permiten reconstruir las tesis esenciales y la estructura conceptual con la que nuestro filósofo sustenta su entero sistema estético.
