La obra estudia la conformación del área de estudios folklóricos en la Universidad de Buenos Aires en el período que abarca desde 1954, con la creación de la Licenciatura en Folklore, hasta 1984, con la regularización de las universidades nacionales. Este campo de investigación en la UBA articuló preocupaciones sobre el patrimonio cultural de la nación con una forma de proyectar el sentido social de las ciencias, por ello este trabajo examina la intersección entre el pensamiento antropológico y el amplio campo de las políticas culturales. Revisa a tal efecto los temas, los campos de acción, la formación y la inserción de futuros profesionales del Folklore y de la Antropología, relacionados con el marco institucional y político de distintas épocas. La publicación se compone de seis artículos que recorren la génesis de los estudios folklóricos en la UBA, los primeros años de su dictado, la inclusión de los estudios del folklore italiano en el currículo, el surgimiento del folklore aplicado y la incursión de los estudiosos del folklore en las estructuras del Estado nacional en el rol de gestores culturales. Por último, se incluye una biografía y semblanza de una de las pioneras de este campo científico, la doctora Martha T. Blache.
