Para todas las dictaduras, y más si surgen tras una cruenta conflagración civil, la imagen legitimadora es básica. Esta imagen ha de ser ganada, no en los campos de batalla como lo fue el bolchevismo patrio e internacional -según el lema franquista-, sino en la Opinión Pública conformada por acólitos, neutrales y contrarios. Por ello, los discursos persuasivos y propagandísticos han de ser complementarios con el diario quehacer del unificador y pretendidamente conciliador ‘gobernar para todos los españoles’. El Régimen del 18 de julio utilizó al cine como mejor escaparate de sus logros y hazañas (con h). Este lenguaje audiovisual suponía el único de tal naturaleza hasta bien entrada la década de los 60, cuando la televisión irrumpe en los hogares españoles de manera generalizada. Títulos, hoy míticos, servían a los vencedores para transmitir sus valores de manera constante, y no sólo mediante películas netamente propagandísticas, sino también a través de otras mucho más ‘inocentes’ que permitían modelizar una sociedad aceptante del Régimen sin mayores incidencias. España iba bien. Las aportaciones de varios profesores investigadores de la Universidad Española se han plasmado en el presente libro, multidiscipliar y variado, que analiza la unión entre la séptima arte -el cine- y la imagen pública del franquismo reflejada a su través. Patrocinado por el Fórum Internacional de Comunicación y Relaciones Públicas (Fórum XXI), la Sociedad Española de Estudios de la Comunicación Iberoamericana (SEECI) y el Grupo de Investigación Validado Complutense Concilium, el presente trabajo representa una voluntad divulgadora que pretende erigirse como referencia para el tratamiento del fenómeno de las Relaciones Públicas en el mundo universitario, con vocación universalista hacia el gran público y, en especial, hacia el amante de la cinematografía como vehículo de contenidos.

The rise of consumerism in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries radically changed the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us. And, as it has throughout history, the social construct of “ideal” masculinity both reflects and responds to that lived reality, helping individuals adapt. Through a close study of Spanish film of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this book investigates hegemonic, or dominant, masculinity in the wake of dramatic consumer changes that occurred in Spain. It explores the ways in which masculine identity as represented in Spanish film positions itself in relation to desire and consumption, focusing especially on representations of hegemonic masculinity from the almost 40 year dictatorship of General Francisco Franco through the transition to democracy and into the early 1990s. Using psychoanalytic theory as employed primarily by Todd McGowan and Slavoj Žižek, this book analyzes cinematic representations of hegemonic masculine models, along with those portrayed as less favorable, to understand how political, social and economic changes in Spain in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries affect the process of masculine identity formation. In the shift from a “society of prohibition” to a “society of commanded enjoyment,” hegemonic masculinity as represented in Spanish film changes dramatically, initially organizing itself around prohibition and self-renunciation in the early Franco dictatorship and later, with neoliberal reforms and mass media promotion of consumerist values starting in the 1950s, reorienting itself around desire and enjoyment (embodied, for example, in the sexually promiscuous, fashionable young man of the 1970s). Personal pleasure and the satisfaction of one’s desires replace submission, obedience and self-abnegation—leading to a reconstruction of masculine identities in a social context that appears increasingly fragmented, plural and individualistic. The primary innovation of this text involves the repositioning of consumerism as a fundamental force in the formation of Spanish masculinity and showing how widely disseminated masculine models serve to accommodate political, social and economic demands.

This book addresses contemporary discourses on a wide variety of topics related to the ideological and epistemological changes of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and the ways in which they have shaped the Spanish language and cultural manifestations in both Spain and Hispanic America. The majority of the chapters are concerned with ‘otherness’ in its various dimensions; the alien Other – foreign, immigrant, ethnically different, disempowered, female or minor – as well as the Other of different sexual orientation and/or ideology. Following Octavio Paz, otherness is expressed as the attempt to find the lost object of desire, the frustrating endeavour of the androgynous Plato wishing to embrace the other half of Zeus, who in his wrath, tore off from him. Otherness compels human beings to search for the complement from which they were severed. Thus a male joins a female, his other half, the only half that not only fills him but which allows him to return to the unity and reconciliation which is restored in its own perfection, formerly altered by divine will. As a result of this transformation, one can annul the distance that keeps us away from that which, not being our own, turns into a source of anguish. The clashing diversity of all things requires the human predisposition to accept that which is different. Such a predisposition is an expression of epistemological, ethical and political aperture. The disposition to co-exist with the different is imagined in the de-anthropocentricization of the bonds with all living realms. And otherness is, in some way, the reflection of sameness (mismidad). The other is closely related to the self, because the vision of the other implies a reflection about the self; it implies, consciously or not, a relationship with the self. These topics are addressed in this book from an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing arts, humanities and social sciences.
