Over the past few decades, a growing number of studies have highlighted the importance of the ‘School of Salamanca’ for the emergence of colonial normative regimes and the formation of a language of normativity on a global scale. According to this influential account, American and Asian actors usually appear as passive recipients of normative knowledge produced in Europe. This book proposes a different perspective and shows, through a knowledge historical approach and several case studies, that the School of Salamanca has to be considered both an epistemic community and a community of practice that cannot be fixed to any individual place. Instead, the School of Salamanca encompassed a variety of different sites and actors throughout the world and thus represents a case of global knowledge production. The work published in this third, and final, volume of Brill’s handbook on the tradition of the Book of Sentences breaks new ground in three ways. First, several chapters contribute to the debate concerning the meaning of medieval authority and authorship. For some of the most influential literature on the Sentences consisted of study aids and compilations that were derivative or circulated anonymously. Consequently, the volume also sheds light on theological education “on the ground”—the kind of teaching that was dispensed by the average master and received by the average student. Finally, the contributors show that Peter Lombard’s textbook played a much more dynamic role in later medieval theology than hitherto assumed. The work remained a force to be reckoned with until at least the sixteenth century, especially in the Iberian Peninsula. Contributors are Claire Angotti, Monica Brinzei, Franklin T. Estas palabras que Cristo dirigió en la oración a Santa Teresa de Jesús fueron motivo de profunda reflexión para ella y para sus más estrechos colaboradores en la reforma de la descalcez. La presente obra tiene como finalidad insertarse en este deseo apasionante de responder, en lo que tiene de respuesta, un profundo misterio: la inhabitación trinitaria. Desde este deseo, nuestro objetivo es estudiar las aportaciones y límites que ofrecen los teólogos españoles tomistas del siglo XVII a la cuestión de las misiones divinas y, más en concreto, a la inhabitación trinitaria. Para ello, después de profundizar en el contexto histórico y teológico, tenemos un primer objetivo: profundizar en la enseñanza de Santo Tomás de Aquino, ya que es el punto de referencia de toda la reflexión posterior. Un objetivo ulterior es el estudio de las enseñanzas de los dominicos y carmelitas españoles del siglo XVII al respecto, destacando sus grandes núcleos temáticos y subrayando los principios metafísicos que están vigentes en su argumentación. Para una mayor comprensión de su explicación estudiamos anteriormente el planteamiento jesuítico, concretamente el de Vázquez y Suárez, pues creemos que a contrario ofrecen luz a la exégesis tomista. Como apéndice, relacionamos las aportaciones de la reflexión tomista del siglo XVII con la teología actual, concretamente con Rahner y su noción de causalidad formal trascendente.
