This book examines the trajectory of the historical knowledge about journalism produced by its scholars in Brazil, from the early accounts originating from the Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute in the 19th century to the specialized academic field at the turn of the 21st century. The history of journalism historiography shows that during the Empire and the Old Republic, the press was idealized as a means of education and a form of mirror of events. After the New State, there was a tendency to view it as an instrument for manipulating public opinion and a suspicious documentary source in the eyes of historians. Finally, with the end of the Military Regime, and with the emergence of the area of communication studies, it came to be analyzed as an element of mediation of public debate and a space for sociability. Regarding this last phase, Daros argues that despite aspirations to subordinate journalism history to communication history, the field still lacks more significant historiographical undertakings beyond print media. This volume is aimed at scholars of journalism studies and media history, the historiography of the press and journalism, the history of historiography, and Brazilian historiography.

WILMA MARTINS DE MENDONÇA1* Não é a primeira publicação do Osman, embora essa seja o que parece a que ele se dedicou - um romance histórico - um romance construído pela memória, e é ficção, porque a memória, a gente não tem a memória completa, precisa ir preenchendo com a imaginação, e aí ele vai falar do ambiente em que nasceu. Ele retoma uma temática, que é uma temática muito cara aos grandes romancistas do Nordeste, principalmente os romancistas do movimento modernista, porque se fala do regionalismo nordestino... Puro preconceito, não? Machado de Assis só escreveu sobre o Rio de Janeiro e não é regionalista. Mas entre nós, na universidade, inventou-se isso, e o que houve aqui é o quê? O modernismo do Nordeste quem vai tematizar o desenvolvimento do capitalismo no Nordeste. É isso que mata Cecílio, imenso, o personagem que narra a história. Eu achei que o Osman foi muito sábio em trazer o Rio do Braço, que é uma região do cacau, e narrar em terceira pessoa. E por que que a literatura é tão importante? Por que que a gente fica tão feliz? Mesmo que a gente não lembre, a gente sonha todos os dias. E se a gente não sonhar, é provado que enlouquece. Então, essa cota de ficção é necessária a nossa vida. Não há um só povo em qualquer tempo, em qualquer lugar, que não tenha feito literatura. E a literatura não é esse sonhar acordado com que a gente escapa da realidade. A literatura, ela brota da força, das coisas que habitam em nós que é a condição para que se convertam em palavras. E nessas palavras se encontra a radicalidade humana... Por isso que numa sociedade capitalista como a nossa, a literatura já não tem importância. Por quê? Porque ela trabalha essa radicalidade do humano que não interessa a aparência do capital. E qualquer 1* WILMA MARTINS DE MENDONÇA - Graduada em Letras pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba (1980), com Especialização em Literatura Brasileira (UFPB, 1988), Mestrado em Literatura Brasileira (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras PPGL/ UFPB, 1993), é Doutora em Teoria da Literatura pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras e Linguística da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco UFPE (2002). Atualmente, é professora de Literatura Brasileira da Universidade Federal da Paraíba, pesquisadora/coordenadora do Projeto, Literatura e brasilidade: linguagens e sentidos da vida nacional, junto ao Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras da UFPB PPGL. Com vários artigos publicados, é autora da obra, Memórias de nós: o Brasil no redemoinho do capital (2012; 2013 e 2014) e uma das organizadoras do livro, Mari yé bo ' eshé (2014). professor de literatura fica muito encantado quando surge um livro, porque a gente sabe que no mundo como o de hoje cheio de guerras que a gente tá vivendo, ou a beleza artística nos salvará ou nós não teremos salvação. E é necessário cada vez mais que a gente escreva. E hoje está muito bom porque a mulherada tem superado, vocês bastam olhar, são só perfis masculinos, mas a mulherada começou a narrar como se sente no mundo, ou seja, não precisa que o homem escreva sobre a mulher; a gente está escrevendo sobre nós. Outra coisa muito interessante é a literatura de cunho indígena, cada vez mais, as nossas narrativas tradicionais estão sendo trabalhadas. Porque é que eu não vou falar muito sobre o livro de Osman? Eu defendo uma crítica humanizada. A literatura é algo tão importante que faz a gente conversar com Augusto dos Anjos. A gente conversa com os mortos como conversa com os vivos. E eu defendo uma primeira leitura pessoal. A crítica literária, a teoria literária que são importantes, para mim só deve ser lida ou ser ouvida após essa primeira experiência, esse primeiro diálogo entre o autor e o seu leitor. Imagina se eu chegasse aqui e dissesse que o livro é assim, assado, assim. Não. Isso seria, inclusive, um ato de lesar um direito de uma primeira leitura pessoal: a que eu fiz, e que vocês têm o direito de fazer. O que eu digo é que o livro se insere numa tradição literária das melhores da nossa região não só da Bahia, mas do Nordeste, que não é só Osman que está escrevendo. Há uma retomada hoje entre vários autores paraibanos e nordestinos porque a gente parece que notou que a gente, o desenvolvimento da coisa, do produto, não é o desenvolvimento humano. E a literatura significa antes de tudo, o sonhar acordado das humanidades, ou seja, a gente cresce, transforma o caos, organiza em palavras. Então, a literatura, para nós, como dizia Graciliano Ramos, também é uma arma; uma arma contra a coisificação humana. Esse resgate da radicalidade humana, o Osman fez através do Cecílio. E ele faz uma coisa muito boa: na nossa literatura, a literatura brasileira, seja a representação do cangaceiro, de um louco, ou de qualquer coisa, nenhum personagem perde a humanidade. É uma característica da literatura brasileira, diferente, inclusive, da literatura de outros países... No Brasil, é tanto que Lampião virou herói, Maria Bonita o símbolo da feminilidade, do feminismo entre nós... Então, há várias personagens loucas, mas que se preservam na humanidade. Tem um personagem que ao falar da Maria Doida que vai dizer: “ela era limpinha e com a culinária ela era boa.” Então a gente também volta aos folguedos que se teve anteriormente o pau-de-sebo, a cantoria, o circo que chega, o poste que agora é de cimento não vai ser mais o poste de madeira, perigoso, não é? E Osman vai retomando isso. Vai retomando, e de forma bilíngue porque ele faz também em nota de rodapé, a tradução em espanhol e diferente dos nossos irmãos latino-americanos. Eu observei que não é aquele purismo da Espanha. E aí é muito belo essa retomada do passado, da meninice. Aliás, o Chico César tem uma música que diz que recordar a meninice é belíssimo - (Flor de Mandacaru) E aí Osman faz isso! Dá uma retomada legal, uma recriação no nosso universo e que qualquer um ou uma de nós a gente se identifica com o personagem, a gente se identifica com a mudança, a importância do cacau na região da Bahia para o seu crescimento econômico, os perigos, e de tal sorte que eu sugiro a vocês uma boa leitura.
