En 1980 ETA inició una dura campaña contra el mundo de la droga en el País Vasco. Según la banda terrorista, el Estado habría introducido la heroína como arma política para desmovilizar y destruir a la juventud vasca. Este libro explica cómo la cruzada contra la droga por parte de ETA formó parte fundamental de su estrategia armada para construir nación y consolidar estructuras de contrapoder en oposición al Estado. Pero sobre todo busca impugnar con datos y hechos la versión de la conspiración de la heroína y otros mitos defendidos por la organización terrorista sobre la “mafia de la droga”.

El consumo masivo de la heroína tuvo sus orígenes a finales de los años setenta, pero sería a principios de los ochenta, en buena parte como consecuencia de la aparición del VIH, el momento en que la sociedad vasca reaccionó con alarma ante las dramáticas consecuencias de la que por entonces se denominó epidemia de la heroína: la muerte por sobredosis o por el sida, la asociación entre consumo y distintas formas de delincuencia, la espectacularización mediática y cinematográfica de la realidad de la drogadicción; sucesos que generaron tal clima social que en esta obra se han caracterizado, recurriendo a la sociología, como “pánico moral”. Este trabajo intenta alejarse de los aspectos más dramáticos y oscuros de esta lacra para hacer memoria de la reacción de tantas familias que, en la búsqueda de un apoyo para responder a la situación en la que se encontraban sus hijos e hijas, comenzaron a agruparse en diferentes asociaciones, así como de la temprana respuesta institucional ante el problema de las drogas. Este libro, desde diferentes puntos de vista, repasa lo que la heroína supuso en la década de los ochenta en el País Vasco y en la sociedad gipuzkoana en particular.
