[Résumé français]La nutrition apparaît comme l’un des déterminants d’une vieillesse réussie et performante : marqueur du pronostic de morbidité et de mortalité.La santé bucco-dentaire occupe une place privilégiée dans la vie quotidienne de tout individu, mais particulièrement de la personne âgée.Notre travail, réalisé auprès de sujets âgés entrants en médecine gériatrique ou en soins de suite a cherché à montrer l’existence d’une corrélation entre le mauvais état bucco-dentaire et la dénutrition.Cette étude montre qu’il est important d’essayer et de conserver le plus longtemps possible les dents naturelles du patient et, sinon, de lui proposer un remplacement prothétique pour le protéger de la dénutrition, même à un âge avancé.Connaissant les difficultés de leur mise en pratique, il est nécessaire de mettre en place une information, une prévention et des actions sur l’hygiène et les soins bucco-dento-prothètiques des personnes âgées, à domicile comme en institution.

La dénutrition est une pathologie complexe et multifactorielle. Elle expose les patients â des risques majeurs et peut avoir, dans certains cas, une incidence sur le risque vital notamment chez les personnes âgées qui représentent une population vulnérable. Du fait de sa fréquence et de ses effets sur la morta/morbidité, elle doit être repérée tôt afin de permettre une prise en charge rapide. La prise en compte de l'état nutritionnel des personnes âgées apparait donc comme incontournable. De nombreuses mesures de prévention ont été mises en place depuis quelques années afin de palier à ce phénomène. Nous avons réalisé une étude au sein de l'accueil de jour Mérybel chez 46 personnes âgées de plus de 65 ans afin de déterminer s'il existe un lien réel entre le risque de malnutrition et la santé bucco-dentaire chez les séniors. Après sélection des patients via le score MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination), nous avons réalisé un examen clinique de l'état dentaire de chaque résident. Puis, nous avons évalué â l'aide d'un questionnaire, le risque de malnutrition (via le M_NA: Mini Nutritional Assessment) et l'évaluation subjective de la santé dentaire (via le GOHAI: Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index). Il en résulte que le chirurgien dentiste a un rôle déterminant dans le dépistage précoce de la malnutrition des personnes âgées.

The underlying philosophy of these two symposia on taurine remains the same as all those that have been held previously: the best way to remain current in the subject matter is to talk directly with the investigators at the forefront of the field. Thus, we brought together some 50 individuals from 11 different countries who have keen interests and active research programs in the many-faceted areas of taurine research. The meetings were held on October 8-10, 1991, in an elegant setting in a resort area at Orange Beach, Alabama, approximately 50 miles outside of Mobile on the Gulf Coast. The meetings were programmed as two separate Symposia held sequentially. The first symposia on October 8 was devoted exclusively to taurine research in the cat, primarily in the area of nutrition, and entitled "The Waltham Symposium on Taurine and Cat Nutrition". The second symposia on October 9 and 10 was open to all fields of taurine research and was entitled "International Taurine Symposium: New Dimensions on its Mechanisms of Actions". If the philosophy of these meetings was to bring both experts and novices together in a discussion and presentation of current taurine research, then the major purpose of the Proceedings is to document the current research efforts and to present an objective summary of where the taurine field stands today and where the focus will be in the future.
