Excerpt from Ethereal Matter: Electricity and Akasa It seems as if this ether has, generally, been considered to be a simple and uniform fluid. A somewhatmore unreasonable theory has lately been worked out by Sir William Thompson and others, who consider it to be an elastic solid which fills the whole universe, and who try to illustrate all physical phenomena by the vibrations of an elastic solid. It may be remarked that this theory was held to be orthodox in Sir Wil liam Thompson's time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Take a deep breath. Air—without it, life on Earth would cease to exist. Though not usually seen, its presence is relied upon. At once both ethereal and physical, air has been associated with flight and spirit, and yet it has progressively become a territory that can be claimed through communications, warfare, travel, and scientific exploration. At the same time, air is no longer a completely reliable part of our daily life: like water, it has become an environmental element that must be watched closely for quality and purity. A Matter of Air investigates the meanings of air over the last three centuries, including our modern concern over emissions and climate change. Steven Connor looks at the human relationship with air, both positive and negative. His explorations include the dangers posed by radio atmospherics, poison gas, and haze as well as our continued fascination with effervescence and explosives. Drawing ideas from religion, science, art, literature, and philosophy, A Matter of Air creates a comprehensive history of the human perception of air. Thoroughly researched and written with wit and quirky enthusiasm, the book will appeal to a wide range of general readers interested in the environment, human history, and our most essential aspects of life.

Introduction To The Quantum Theory Of Matter And Radiation written by Mohamed F. El-Hewie and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-01 with Science categories.

This revised edition narrates the brief history of the people, the events, and the ideas that advanced mankind into the electrical, nuclear, and space ages. The book describes the basic concepts of Quantum Mechanics and the efforts made to decipher the secrets of the structure of atoms, molecules, crystals and elementary nuclear particles. The author emphasizes the inherent limitations of classical mechanics that led to paradoxical outcome of the special theory of relativity, which in turn infected Dirac's attempts to rehabilitate the Schrodinger's Quantum Wave Equations. During the hundred and ten odd years of its existence, Quantum Mechanics has passed through three distinct stages of development. The first stage began by Planck's quanta and ended de Broglie's matter waves. It could be properly described as the stage of structuring the electronic shells of the atom. The second stage in the development of Quantum Mechanics began with de Broglie's discovery of matter waves, in 1924 and ended with the end of WWII. It could be properly described as the stage of deciphering the nuclear forces of the atomic core. The theory of the nucleus of the atom was created and new elementary particles were discovered that revealed some of the secrets of the nuclear forces. The third period began after World War II with the invention of nuclear reactors, radiospectrometers, and high altitude flights. This stage could be properly described as the phase of high energy exploration of the nuclear elementary particles. During this stage, Quantum Mechanics come up against ever greater difficulties, setbacks and failures. The newly discovered behaviors of elementary particles and their interactions shook the foundation of the old laws upon which Quantum Mechanics was erected.
