Situational crime prevention has drawn increasing interest in recent years, yet the debate has looked mainly at whether it 'works' to prevent crime. Little attention has been paid to how it alters conceptions and strategies of crime prevention in modern society, and to the ethical questions concerning its potential impact on freedom and privacy.; This volume aims to address the ethics of situational crime prevention. Are situational crime prevention strategies likely to constrain unduly people's freedom of movement? Do such strategies involve an intrusive scrutiny of people's everyday activities? Can ethical principles be developed that would help distinguish acceptable from unacceptable forms of intervention?; The second issue concerns the place of situational crime prevention within criminology.

This book addresses the ethics of Situational Crime Prevention (SCP). It seeks not only to analyse specific SCP measures but to demonstrate how ethical analysis can support and improve the implementation of SCP strategies. In ethically analysing a particular SCP measure, it is not enough to look at empirical data. Even if a measure is effective at preventing crime, it may turn out to be ethically unattractive because it harms more people than it benefits, or because it violates our right to free movement. The book proceeds from the assumption that decision-making about whether we should use SCPs can only be conducted by carefully identifying, clarifying, and critically evaluating the ethical arguments for and against use of the SCP measure in question. The author analyses several SCP strategies that have not been treated in detail in criminology or applied ethics literatures. These SCP strategies include gated communities, excluding people with a criminal record from housing or employment, the use of hostile design in public spaces, and the implementation of intelligent speed adaption in vehicles. Ethics and Situational Crime Prevention is an essential resource for criminologists, moral philosophers, legal scholars, and social scientists with an interest in crime prevention.

"While increasing attention has been directed to the legal and criminological aspects of situational crime prevention, focused ethical discussion of the measures involved has been notable by its absence. Situational crime prevention measures are being used increasingly in various forms in cities all around the world. This book addresses the complex ethical challenges related to preventive exclusion that have only been addressed in a limited way in the academic literature. This volume brings together world-leading experts in ethics and penal theory to answer controversial questions about the ethics of preventing crime by exclusion. Situational crime prevention measures - such as gated communities, hostile design, or annoying music or noise - intended to exclude some or all people from an area to prevent crime present important ethical questions. Is the use of exclusionary measures antithetical to the attainment of social justice or to addressing the root causes of crime? If such measures result merely in the displacement of crime, does this mean they are without value, or morally questionable? What are the conceptual relationships between exclusionary measures, civic trust, and moral agency? Do some or all exclusionary measures fail to respect potential offenders as rational agents? When, if ever, is the use of exclusion to prevent crime discriminatory? And do such measures have a morally problematic expressive dimension? This book is invaluable for scholars with an interest in crime prevention, criminal law, and criminal justice. The practical implications will also appeal to practitioners in the criminal justice system involved in the implementation and administration of preventive exclusion"--

Understanding Crime Prevention written by Gordon Hughes and has been published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-10-16 with Law categories.

How can criminological, sociological and historical perspectives illuminate the elusive concept of crime prevention? Are we witnessing a new governance of crime control? What are the futures of crime prevention in late modernity? This book offers a comprehensive overview of current and historical debates about crime prevention in particular and social control more generally. It moves beyond the traditional boundaries of criminology and offers an original re-framing of the field of crime prevention based on a synthesis of exciting new thinking in social theory. In particular, recent theorising around late modernity, risk society, communitarianism and globalization are put forward as important ways of linking trends in crime prevention to wider social transformations. This innovative text looks at the contested history of crime prevention in the modern era and considers present and future trends in social control in late modernity. Hughes focuses on the question of the "managerialization" of crime prevention in recent decades, the extent to which crime control may become dominated by privatized security and insurance against risks, and the attractions and pitfalls of informal community-based approaches. Understanding Crime Prevention will be essential reading for students and researchers in the field as well as many professional and lay people interested in crime prevention and community safety.
