As the first full-length study of its kind to outline a positive vision of the ethics of contemporary art, this book distances itself from previous accounts that focus on transgression. The critique of transgressive art is not made on the basis that it is wrong, but that it no longer succeeds on its own terms in societies where language, prohibition and morality are more plastic than they once were. The boundary of a contemporary art object or project is no longer something that exists only in physical space; it also exists in social, political, and ethical space. Art has opened up to transnational networks of producers and audiences, migrating into the sphere of social and distributive systems, whether in the form of "relational aesthetics" or other critical reinventions of practice. Art has thus become increasingly implicated in questions of ethics. Beshty evaluates the relation of ethics to aesthetics, and demonstrates how this encounter has become central to the contested space of much recent art. This dissertation, based on over three years of fieldwork, explores the cultural politics of contemporary art in Bhutan. Beginning in the 1950s and culminating in the transition to democracy in 2008, Bhutan has undergone profound social changes. Throughout these changes, the government has prioritized preserving Bhutanese culture, including in official understandings of what development means. Rather than using GDP to measure the country's well-being, Bhutan's government organizes development around the concept of GNH or Gross National Happiness, a concept believed to have deep roots in Bhutan's Buddhist culture. I argue that the tensions between continuity and change are framed in ethical terms in Bhutan. As Bhutanese navigate balancing tradition with cosmopolitan modernity, their king has called for an "individualism of values" as a corrective to "individualism at the cost of community and fraternity." While much previous work in Bhutan has documented culture, comparatively little research has examined the process of change or what the efforts to preserve cultural values means for the day to day life of Bhutanese. The realm of contemporary art, I show, provides an avenue to consider how Bhutanese are negotiating competing ethical values during these times of dramatic change. Beyond the study of Bhutan, this dissertation contributes to the already rich discussion about agency and cultural politics often explored through art by drawing on recent discussions of the anthropology of ethics. Looking at ethics helps understand agency by examining not only how people act but also fashion themselves as particular types of actors. Using an ethnographic lens to study everyday social action and interaction through art allows the ethical negotiations underway in Bhutan to come into focus. Beginning with a history of Bhutanese contemporary art and overview of the official discourse on national identity, I turn to an ethnography of contemporary art. I show how artists prioritize some forms of individualism more than others, and work to situate themselves within the broader social fabric. Finally, I look at how contemporary artists use traditional Buddhist art, both balancing their pursuit of artistic subjectivity with Buddhist values and the sense of obligation to preserve Bhutanese cultural traditions.

Since its inception in the 1960s, the earth art movement has sought to make visible the elusive presence of nature. Though most often associated with monumental land-based sculptures, earth art encompasses a wide range of media, from sculpture, body art performances, and installations to photographic interventions, public protest art, and community projects. In The Ethics of Earth Art, Amanda Boetzkes analyzes the development of the earth art movement, arguing that such diverse artists as Robert Smithson, Ana Mendieta, James Turrell, Jackie Brookner, Olafur Eliasson, Basia Irland, and Ichi Ikeda are connected through their elucidation of the earth as a domain of ethical concern. Boetzkes contends that in basing their works’ relationship to the natural world on receptivity rather than representation, earth artists take an ethical stance that counters both the instrumental view that seeks to master nature and the Romantic view that posits a return to a mythical state of unencumbered continuity with nature. By incorporating receptive surfaces into their work—film footage of glaring sunlight, an aperture in a chamber that opens to the sky, or a porous armature on which vegetation grows—earth artists articulate the dilemma of representation that nature presents. Revealing the fundamental difference between the human world and the earth, Boetzkes shows that earth art mediates the sensations of nature while allowing nature itself to remain irreducible to human signification.
