Das vorliegende Essay stellt die signifikante Frage, ob man die mögliche Schädigung einer geringen Anzahl von Menschen in einem experimentellen Verfahren hinnehmen soll, wenn einer sehr viel größeren Anzahl durch die Forschungsergebnisse geholfen werden kann. Die Ethik ist die Philosophie der Moral und wird neben der Logik und der Erkenntnis-Theorie als Teildisziplin der Philosophie und auch als die Disziplin des systematischen Nachdenkens über das Gute definiert. Sie blickt auf eine lange Tradition und auf Aristoteles (384-322 v. Chr.) zurück, der als erster seine umfassenden Untersuchungen über das menschliche Handeln und die Kriterien seiner moralischen Beurteilungen unter dem Titel Ethik vorgelegt hat. Seit jeher haben sich die Menschen mit der Ethik allgemein beschäftigt, insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit dem gesellschaftlichen Zusammenleben und der hierfür als notwendig erachteten moralischen Prinzipien und Wertevorstellungen. Um die Fragen „Was ist gut/richtig, was ist schlecht oder falsch? / Ist es ethisch vertretbar, was ich mache? / Wie soll ich mich verhalten/entscheiden?“ zu beantworten, braucht es gewisse Abmachungen und Regeln, die für alle Menschen gelten sollen. Das ist die Aufgabe der Ethik. Sie gibt somit auch die Richtung an, was verboten oder erlaubt ist oder verboten oder erlaubt werden sollte.
