Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, Addis Ababa University, course: economics, language: English, abstract: The main objective of the study is to see overall contribution of tourism to the Ethiopian economy. Specifically: Tourism contribution to the GDP of the country, Tourism contribution to employment, Tourism contribution to foreign exchange generation, To examine the causal effect of tourism on economic growth. Furthermore this research is to investigate the contribution of tourism for the Ethiopian economy over the year 2004-2014 for descriptive and 1991-2014 for econometrics. Graphs, table and, percent and Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Approach to Co-integration and Error Correction Model are applied in order to investigate the long-run effect of tourism receipt on economic growth. Specifically this research assessed the impact of tourism on GDP, employment, foreign exchange earnings, and economic growth. The result shows tourism positive contribution to GDP, employment, foreign exchange earnings and stable relationship between tourism receipt and economic growth. The empirical result reveals that tourism receipt found to have positive impact on economic growth. So the government and citizens should strive to improve tourism industry and to generate more income especially foreign exchange. According to WTO, tourism is a combination of activities travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one year for leisure, business and other activities. It is beyond the common perception of tourism as being limited to holiday activity. The WTO further explains that tourism refers to all activities of visitors including both tourist (overnight visitors) and same day visitors. This definition was adopted by UK government and WTO used it since 2004. Tourism developed many years back when people travel from one place to another place for different purpose. Human beings have been active travelers for the purpose of hunting and gathering, herding animals in small groups that provided them with food, skin for cloth and bones for making different tools.

Tour operating firms are key players in the tourism sector. In view of this, the roles they play in Ethiopian tourism was the subject of this study. Such things as their branch distribution, promotional methods they employ, the skills and training of their personnel, and the level of involvement of local communities in their operations were studied. It was observed that tour operating firms are highly vertically integrated, have low branch distributions in tourist attraction sites, employ limited promotional media, and involve local communities in some forms of tourism activities at tourist destination sites. The sector is also characterized by lack of skilled man power and appropriate infrastructures.

The Government of Ethiopia (GOE) has set in train an initiative to develop the tourism sector in Ethiopia. This study supports this objective through in depth analysis of the supply and demand sides of the sector and by proposing a focused and viable strategy to grow tourist visitation and revenues whilst supporting the GOE poverty reduction goals. The study identified that tourism generated approximately US$ 132 million in in country expenditure revenue from a base of about 150,000 foreign visitors who came to Ethiopia for various purposes such as leisure, business and conferences and to visit friends and relatives. The study established that each of these categories of visitor have different expenditure and length of stay characteristics and based on this suggests a strategy of focusing on the development of leisure tourism, identifying this as the segment with the most potential to deliver growth. A final theme focuses on the need to improve demand for tourism and to work on the image of Ethiopia. Several strategies are suggested including marketing and business development support for Ethiopian tour operators and accommodation owners. A major issue identified is that Ethiopia has little defined product being sold in the market place. It is expected that a strategy that defines product, develops it and improves its delivery will yield improved demand and image results.

Ethiopia is one of the Sub-Saharan countries experiencing fast growing economy. Ethiopia authorized a structure of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MoCT) to manage the tourism industry. The relevance of the tourism sector was entertained in the strategic pillars of the Growth and Transformation Plans (GTP- 2010/11-2019/20). Therefore, this research attempted to assess the policy directions in the country and practice of community based tourism (CBT) in the Lake Tana growth corridor, which is the second rank in Ethiopia, next to Addis Ababa Development Corridor. The paper used comprehensive analysis of primary and secondary data; such as interviews, observations and document analysis. The result revealed that Tana has natural and manmade heritages. The many endemic fauna, flora and heritages attract tourists. The lake has been a source of livelihood and means of water transportation for the catchment communities. Tana is a UNESCO registered biosphere reserve since 2015. Though policy in the general tourism industry is strong; however, there is a gap of directives with regard to community based tourism practices. Both GTPs and the policies did not address the grassroots practice and miss-linked. Therefore, for the maximum utilization of the sector, protection of the environment and expansion of community based Tourism; it needs the collaborative participation of governmental, nongovernmental, and private sectors. The establishment and expansion of inclusive community based tourism practices, and promotion of the sector shall be given maximum attention by all concerned bodies and stakeholders.
