Human-centredness: A Challenge to Post-industrial Europe? The key power in industrial society has been linked to the possession of capital and factory. In the "information society" it could be rather different. If one accepts that that the key power in the information society will be linked not so much to the ownership of information but to human creativity nourished by that information, the productive force of today and tomorrow, could be more and more the human brain. Making use of one's intelligence is always accompanied by positive emotion, which in turn further activates the intelligence. But, unfortunately, under present conditions workers of all levels live in fear, anxiety and stress rather than desire and motivation. The question of "basic human ecology" (quality of life) is, therefore, a major strategic factor. It is precisely the opposite to the mechanisms of exclusion that currently dominate our society: exclusion of young people through joblessness - but also exclusion through technology, as with the helplessness of older people or the poorly educated confronted with ticket dispensing machines or other automats. This is not idle theorizing, it corresponds to concrete facts. It is, for example, how some observers interpret the crisis at IBM. Because its programs were less 'human-friendly', it was shaken to its foundations by Apple and Microsof- though it seems since to have learnt its lesson.

L'étude ci-après paraîtra probablement un peu confuse ou complexe à ceux qui découvrent le monde caché des technologies de communication mais déjà dépassée à ceux qui le connaissent mieux. Mais si il fallait attendre que tout soit stable dans le monde de l'information ou de la communication, on n'en parlerait jamais. Cette étude prétend par ailleurs répondre au souci justifié de parler de façon concomitante d'éthique, d'information et de communication c'est-à-dire de respect de valeurs anciennes dans un monde si moderne qu'il n'en est qu'à ses balbutiements, avec des préoccupations d'un autre niveau et, nous le verrons, des possibilités de nuisances que nos meilleurs philosophes n'auraient jamais oser [sic] imaginer. Nous avons tenté de suivre la logique suivante : - En introduction, nous définissons d'abord la notion d'éthique pour montrer que ce qui se cache encore derrière ce mot aujourd'hui est le résultat d'une évolution deux fois millénaire axée surtout sur un passé plus ou moins bien connu. Puis nous présentons la conjonction actuelle de trois révolutions qui, pour garder la métaphore précédente, nous imposent un demi-tour mental et préparent une évolution axée maintenant sur un futur totalement inconnu. - La seconde partie montre que dans cet immatériel, ce virtuel, ce flou, deux logiques commencent à s'affronter, qui sont le fait de ceux qui promeuvent et de ceux qui subissent, deux mondes qui se parlent mal. Il y a d'un côté l'attitude traditionnelle dite "brick & mortar", qui pourrait se caractériser par "la logique propriétaire", c'est-à-dire une recherche d'ordre, de contrôle et de propriété. Il y a par ailleurs une attitude nouvelle dite "dot.com", qui quoique encore minoritaire, et fortement chahutée en bourse, n'en traîne pas moins avec elle un cortège de nouveaux acteurs qu'il convient de présenter. Nous nous attarderons donc particulièrement sur la "hacker attitude" pour présenter des personnages, les hackers, à la fois fort mal connus et indissociables de la révolution informatique, dont le comportement, les valeurs et l'éthique méritent notre attention. - Dans une troisième partie, "Les nouvelles nuisances", nous présentons un certain nombre de menaces techniques nouvelles dues au développement d'un monde virtuel caractérisé par la rencontre de nouvelles technologies avec de nouveaux acteurs, ce qui crée des situations nouvelles face auxquelles chacun doit définir de nouvelles postures. - La quatrième partie montre précisément ce qu'elles peuvent être, selon que l'on est un pirate ou que, par diverses tentatives de récupération on tente de transformer en "corsaires" les hackers jusque-là si mal considérés pour qu'ils nous protègent des précédents dans le cadre d'une guerre de l'information qui ne semble malheureusement en être qu'à ses balbutiements et où tous les coups semblent permis pour se protéger. - Enfin, comme nous le dirons en conclusion, "les choses ne seront plus jamais comme avant car les enjeux étaient - et restent - si importants, que la fin a justifié bien des moyens que la morale préfère probablement ne pas connaître pour l'instant."
