The post-Communist world has seen a dramatic revival of ethnicity and nationalism. The volume explores the contemporary sources, scope and intensity of nationality conflicts in the context of a disintegrating Soviet Empire. The authors address themselves to the resurgence of ethnicity and nationalism within the former Soviet imperium, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Bulgaria and China and examine the consequences of perestroika and glasnost. Central issues involve identity formation, the nature and implications of ethnic and internal conflicts and possible paths toward resolution.

The theory presented in this work's predecessor, Nation-Building and Ethnic Integration in Post-Soviet Societies: An Investigation of Latvia and Kazakhstan (1999), fails to explain why the Dniester war of 1992 broke out in Moldova while Estonia remained free of large- scale violence. Kolsto (Russian and East European area studies, U. of Oslo, Norway) presents six contributions that revisit the question of when ethnic strife is likely to break out after the removal of authoritarian government. After reviewing candidates for explanatory theories, four country studies explore the evidence and one contribution discusses the international setting. The final chapter compares theory to evidence and concludes that theories of resources and opportunities available to various groups are better predictors of violence than theories of grievances and relative discriminations. Post-Soviet Political Order asks what is shaping the institutional pattern of the post-Soviet political order, what the new order will be like, what patterns of conflict are emerging, and what can be done about stabilising the region. In considering these questions the contributors converge on four common themes: * the institutional legacy of empire * the social processes unleashed by imperial collapse * patterns of bargaining within and between states to resolve conflicts arising out of the imperial collapse * the impact of the wider international setting on the pattern of post-imperial politics Focusing on the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries, the contributors show how strong state institutions are essential if conflict and political instability are to be avoided.

Democratization And Ethnic Peace written by Airat R. Aklaev and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-23 with Social Science categories.

First published in 1999, this book explores the ethnic dimension of democratic peace agenda in new democracies. The democratic peace proposition concerns the fact that free peoples make good neighbours. How does it apply intra-nationally within multiethnic states? Does the establishment of a constructive and peaceful pattern of ethnic conflict management have anything to do with the type of rule? What tasks and dilemmas must be dealt with in order to promote a more positive and stable relationship of peace in democratizing multiethnic systems? The author searches for answers to these and other topical questions to underscore the linkage between ethnopolitical crises, change and choice... The case study section examines the meanings, articulations, dynamics and character of ethnic peace in four post-Soviet cases (Estonia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia) with particular focus on areas, factors and patterns of critical choice in the realms of institutions and interactions at the onset and at critical junctions of the democratization dynamic.
