L’oggetto di ricerca del presente lavoro consiste nell’analisi critica del legame che il sociologo classico Werner Sombart individua tra etica ebraica e spirito del capitalismo, attraverso un’indagine polifattoriale degli elementi che si pongono all’origine dello spirito del capitalismo stesso, messa in atto mediante la lente propria dell’impostazione sociologica. L’obiettivo consiste nel ricostruire le processualità che hanno dato origine allo spirito del capitalismo e che oggi appaiono profondamente trasformate. L’intento è, altresì, di comprendere le derive dell’attuale capitalismo alla luce della sua storia culturale e, dunque, di storicizzare lo spirito del capitalismo per attualizzarlo nel senso di coglierne le dinamiche contemporanee. Questo libro ha vinto il “Premio Tesi di Dottorato 2020” istituito da Sapienza Università Editrice.

Microtubules are essential cellular constituents of eukaryotes formed by tubulin subunits. This book is a collection of medicinal chemistry research projects that utilizes microtubules as drug targets for human diseases of global health impact. The main chapters (2 – 4) include an in-depth description of different synthetic and biological approaches to characterize the therapeutic potential of novel synthetic molecules for cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and neglected tropical diseases. Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most aggressive type of primary solid tumor that develops in bone. Whilst conventional chemotherapy can improve survival rates, the outcome for patients with metastatic or recurrent OS remains poor, so novel treatment agents and strategies are required. Previously published works indicate that Agave exhibits anticancer properties. In the present study, anticancer effects of Agave leaf extract were investigated in the OS cells, discovering that Agave inhibits cell growth and cell migration, and sensitizes OS cells to cisplatin (CDDP), to overcome chemoresistance. Agave’s mechanisms of action include an initial process in which Agave induces YAP/TAZ oncogenic protein degradation, followed by a secondary event whereby Agave inhibits YAP/TAZ transcription through NF-κB p65:p50 heterodimers deregulation. Carbapenems resistant Enterobacteriaceae infections are increasing worldwide representing an emerging public health problem. The application of phylogenetic and phylodynamic analyses to bacterial whole genome sequencing (WGS) data have become essential in epidemiological surveillance of MDR pathogens to discern outbreak from non-outbreak strains in both community and hospital settings. In this study, K. pneumoniae strains circulating within different wards of university hospital were collected and WGS applied. Moreover a microbiological surveillance on duedonoscopes was performed to evaluate their reprocessing. The aim was to infer the origin and the spread of K. pneumoniae nosocomial strains and to clarify the epidemiological transmission as so as the eventual reservoir in the hospital setting supporting the epidemiological surveillance and infections control strategies. Despite being the leading paradigm in computer vision, deep neural networks are inherently limited by the visual and semantic information contained in their training set. In this thesis, we aim to design deep models operating with previously unseen visual domains and semantic concepts. We first describe different solutions for generalizing to new visual domains, applying variants of normalization layers to multiple challenging settings e.g. where new domain data is not available but arrives online or is described by metadata. In the second part, we incorporate new semantic concepts into pretrained deep models. We propose specific solutions for different problems such as multi-task/incremental learning and open-world recognition. Finally, we merge the two challenges: given images of multiple domains and categories, can we recognize unseen concepts in unseen domains? We propose an approach that is the first, promising step, towards solving this problem. Winner of the Competition “Prize for PhD Thesis 2020” arranged by Sapienza University Press.

Come e quando siano nati il capitalismo e il suo spirito è una domanda che Sombart si è posto spesso. Forse è proprio la questione delle origini del capitalismo ad aver consegnato questo Autore alla storia e alla critica. Il merito che gli si riconosce, come noto, è quello di aver colto le determinanti antropologiche, sociali, culturali e religiose, e non soltanto materiali, di un fenomeno principalmente economico, quale è il capitalismo appunto. Ma c'è un'opera, oggi anche in italiano, Guerra e capitalismo, in cui Sombart supera persino il suo pensiero più tradizionale e a queste chiavi di lettura del capitalismo ne aggiunge un'altra (estremamente originale e a tutt'oggi scarsamente conosciuta): il militarismo. Forse è persino più corretto affermare che questa chiave di lettura non si aggiunga alle altre, ma le anticipi, spesso intrecciandosi con esse e in ogni caso spiegandole. Tanto i motivi individuali, l'uomo borghese e l'anima europea (quali determinanti antropologiche), quanto la mentalità e lo spirito economico (le determinanti culturali), quanto ancora la produzione, l'organizzazione e la tecnica (le determinanti socio-economiche), o il puritanesimo e l'ebraismo (e cioè le determinanti religiose), a cui Sombart ha attribuito in altre opere lo status di fonti del capitalismo e del suo spirito, oltre alle rendite agrarie (secondo lui più centrali delle attività commerciali per l'accumulazione originaria del capitale), sembrano trovare nel militarismo un fortissimo alleato e una possibilità unica di enucleazione e di completamento.

Vilfredo Pareto e Werner Sombart. Difficile trovare due classici della sociologia più apparentemente distanti. Il primo nasce ingegnere, il secondo economista. Pareto si serve della geometria e della matematica per “spiegare”, Sombart della fenomenologia e dell’antropologia per “comprendere”. Il volume analizza alcuni aspetti biografici, di metodo e di merito che accomunano i due autori anche quando li distinguono, nella convinzione che tanto gli elementi comuni quanto quelli di contrasto consentano di comprendere meglio la loro speculazione teorica e il loro lascito intellettuale, superando quei confini nei quali i loro studi sono stati spesso confinati. Entrambi autori controversi, ingiustamente isolati e diffamati durante lo stesso scorcio di secolo, divengono invece dei riferimenti inamovibili per le scienze sociali, che a cent’anni dalla scomparsa di Pareto portano ancora memoria della ricchezza del loro lascito.
