Isu HIV-AIDS sesungguhnya telah menarik perhatian saya dari sejak masih studi jenjang magister di University of Houston, Texas. Perhatian tersebut terbangun sejak perasaan emosional saya terusik pada saat mengunjungi shelter anak-anak dengan HIV positif di Houston dalam kegiatan lapangan Mata kuliah Anthropology of HIV-AIDS dan Applied Anthropology. Kepedulian saya terhadap persoalan HIV-AIDS semakin menguat dengan banyaknya kasus-kasus penderitaan orang dengan HIV (ODHIV) yang pernah saya baca dari majalah. Dari pengalaman melihat anak-anak ODHIV secara langsung dan membaca kasus yang dialami teman- teman ODHIV, saya mendapatkan pengetahuan tentang besarnya pengaruh stigma dalam penderitaan hidup ODHIV. Perlakuan diskriminasif tidak saja diperoleh ODHIV dari masyarakat umum yang awam tentang HIV-AIDS, namun juga dari kalangan ahli medis.
