Thomas Pangle and Peter Ahrensdorf provide a critical introduction to the most important conceptions of international justice, spanning 2,500 years of intellectual history from Thucydides and Plato to Morgenthau and Waltz. Their study shows how older traditions of political philosophy remain relevant to current debates in international relations, and how political thinkers through the centuries can help us deepen our understanding of today's stalemate between realism and idealism. Pangle and Ahrensdorf guide the reader through a sequence of theoretical frameworks for understanding the moral basis of international relations: the cosmopolitan vision of the classical philosophers, the "just war" teachings of medieval theologians, the revolutionary realism of Machiavelli, the Enlightenment idealism of Kant, and the neo-realism of twentieth-century theorists. They clarify the core of each philosopher's conceptions of international relations, examine the appeal of each position, and bring these alternatives into mutually illuminating juxtaposition. The authors clearly show that appreciating the fundamental questions pursued by these philosophers can help us avoid dogmatism, abstraction, or oversimplification when considering the moral character of international relations. Justice Among Nations restores the study of the great works of political theory to its natural place within the discipline of international relations as it retrieves the question of international justice as a major theme of political philosophy. It provides our moral compass with new points of orientation and invites serious readers to grapple with some of the most perplexing issues of our time.

Empowerment And Fragility written by Maria João Ferreira and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04 with Biopolitics categories.

The book discusses how the two interrelated questions of biopolitics and ethics influence discursive and non-discursive practices in the fields of international relations and strategic studies. The book debates the following research question of how discussions on global regimes that rule human empowerment and human fragility in international and strategic arenas require the establishment of a complex relation between the contested concepts of biopolitics and ethics. The book focuses on six main areas which are (1) the politics of (in)security, (2) complex emergencies and contemporary terrorism, (3) health, risk and population management, (4) environment and climate change, (5) the politics of memory and trauma and (6) migration and refugee flows. The usefulness of the book derives from critically questioning how, international public policies in sensitive areas like terrorism, global health, global migration flows or humanitarian assistance are being built through global policy regimes and global discursive regimes.

The initial idea for this anthology arose during my work at the interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 485 Norm and Symbol at the University of Konstanz. My research project on the potential of Hobbesian contract theory was in?uenced by the focus of the SFB on social phenomena such as pluralism and cultural change. In this context, I realized that the Hobbesian idea to refer only to instrumental rationality and basic egoistic interests to legitimize a state has, on one hand some advantages for pluralistic societies: All individuals are supposed to share these premises independent of the personal values they might hold. On the other hand, a rational legitimization must cope with the fundamental problem of explaining and legitimizing those tasks of legal states that go beyond the idea of a minimal state. Although my research was focused on the idea of solving this problem with a modi?cation of the Hobbesian argument, I became interested in the more general question of which role morality could or should play in legitimizing a state. Within the current discussion, not only rational but also political accounts of legitimacy can be attractive as soon as they try to avoid contentious normative premises. To analyse some of the core ideas within the current discussion, I - ganized an interdisciplinary workshop at the University of Konstanz in December 2004 in which different perspectives from sociology, politics and philosophy were compared and analysed.

International Ethics written by Mark R. Amstutz and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-21 with Political Science categories.

Now in a comprehensively revised and updated edition, International Ethics cogently demonstrates that moral values and ethical reasoning are indispensable in global politics. Through balanced arguments and a wide-ranging selection of case studies, Mark R. Amstutz convincingly demonstrates that moral norms are an essential element of foreign policy and that ethical analysis is central to the study of international relations. Amstutz illustrates the role of moral norms in global politics with twenty-five revised and new case studies. The cases are focused on eight major global issues: political reconciliation, human rights, war, irregular war, foreign intervention, economic sanctions, justice among states, and global justice. This clearly written study will be of special interest to students and practitioners of international affairs who are concerned with the role of political morality and ethical judgment in global affairs.
