Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most common fatal malignan cies of mankind. Up to a few decades ago it was looked upon as a cancer which aroused mainly academic concern but relatively little clinical interest, because its therapy and prognosis had a most un favorable outlook. Indeed, it was mostly recognized only at autopsy. Recently this pessimism has radically changed and is disappearing to a rapidly accelerating degree. Many of the scientific contributions at this change in outlook are the result of research in the Far East, first, Japan and then gradually extending to its neighbors. The introduction of experimental hepatocarcinogens by Yoshida more than 50 years ago may have been one of the first important steps. Hepatocellular car cinoma shows a characteristic geographical distribution. With the highest incidence in China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, followed by southern and eastern Europe, while generally the incidence is rather low in western and northern Europe and North and South America.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) currently ranks as the third most common cause of death. As the primary malignancy of the liver is directly related to an underlying liver condition, its incidence and profile are expected to change soon. While effective prevention programs and antiviral therapies for hepatitis B and C will lower the incidence of HCC, emerging socioeconomic issues will deliver new at-risk populations. Moreover, diagnostic techniques and protocols have undergone significant advancements. Reliance on contrast enhanced ultrasound has been re-evaluated, imaging methods being considered as sufficient diagnostic tools. Molecular characterization remains desirable, since chemotherapeutic agents still have limited applicability. In light of recent diagnostic advancements and novel therapeutic solutions, it is our belief that a comprehensive update on recent paradigm shifts and interesting upcoming developments is highly needed.

This text provides a practical guide for the diagnostic surgical pathologist in evaluating tumors involving the liver. It comprehensively covers the histological findings and key clinical and molecular correlates of liver tumors. The focus is on material that is most relevant to the actual practice of liver pathology including those aspects that are directly relevant to the diagnosis, subtyping and prognostication of hepatic adenomas specimens, including biopsy specimens and surgical resections. The book will teach pathologists how to avoid common diagnostic pitfalls. Each chapter uses or discusses the nomenclature and classification system of liver tumors as per the current WHO classification of liver tumors. Each chapter fully incorporates the most up to date diagnostic methodologies, including immunohistochemistry and molecular methods. Referencing is succinct and references were carefully chosen for their key role as the primary sources of information on a given disease. The text is richly illustrated with beautiful color images that highlight not just the “average” histological findings for a given entity, but also fully illustrate all of the key histological variability. Gross images are also included to highlight important diagnostic features. Tables are used judiciously to present summary information that allows a quick review on how similar entities compare and contrast. In addition, the clinical significance of various diseases will be discussed in a focused fashion that highlights how pathology information is being used to make key clinical management decisions. Each chapter is written by experts in hepatopathology, all from the Mayo Clinic Departments of Pathology. Surgical Pathology of Liver Tumors will be of great utility to surgical pathologists and surgical pathologists in training as well as clinicians involved in the care of patients with liver tumors, particularly hepatologists and oncologists.

This book covers all liver tumors and lesions that clinically and radiologically mimic liver tumors. It provides readers with a comprehensive overview of this complex and rapidly evolving field. All aspects of surgical pathology are addressed, supplemented by detailed presentations of the lesions’ cell-biologic and molecular features. In addition, the methods employed for diagnosis and diagnostic algorithms are discussed. It appeals to pathologists and hepatologists and serves as an invaluable aid to diagnosis. The field of liver tumors and tumor-like lesions in adults and children has experienced tremendous advances in recent years. Specifically, the recognition of novel entities, deepened insights into known tumors, and refinement of classifications have necessitated continual updates and reappraisals. In addition, previous understanding of hepatic carcinogenesis and tumor progression has been transformed by the very rapid evolution of our understanding of cell biology, genomics, signaling pathways, cell interactions, and mechanisms of invasion and spread of hepatic tumor cells. These general pathology issues must be combined with surgical pathology if a comprehensive understanding of liver tumor pathology is to be achieved.

Pathology Of Incipient Neoplasia written by Donald Earl Henson and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-01-25 with Medical categories.

Many malignant tumors have a morphologically recognizable precursor lesion. As screening and early detection have improved our ability to detect lesions at increasingly earlier stages of growth, an increased number of precancerous lesions are seen by pathologists. Unfortunately, a lack of uniform histologic criteria for precursors found in many organs can make diagnostic interpretation difficult. It is evident that physicians are seeking a better understanding of the genesis and progression of these lesions and their early biology, to provide optimal treatment and patient care. Pathology of Incipient Neoplasia 3E brings together all of the information available on the clinicopathologic features of precancerous lesions, defined to include atypical hyperplasias, in-situ changes, microinvasive or very small cancers in some sites, and other lesions recognized as potential precursors for invasive cancer. In some tissues, benign tumors may serve as precursors to malignant tumors, and therefore these also are considered. Organized by organ, each heavily-illustrated chapter is written by a well-recognized expert, to stress different facets of preneoplasia and minimally invasive tumors in that given tissue. Areas where strides have been made in research on molecular biologic aspects of neoplasia are discussed in conjunction with morphologic parameters. A chapter on salivary glands, and more than 350 color photos interspersed throughout the text, are new to this edition.
