"This study gauges the effects that Walt Whitman's poetry had in Italy in the period from 1870 to 1945: the reactions it provoked, the aesthetic and political agendas it came to sponsor, and the creative responses it facilitated. But it also investigates the contexts and causes of Whitman's success abroad, in the lives, backgrounds, beliefs, and imaginations of the people who encountered it. Ultimately, it chronicles the evolution of a literature intent on regenerating itself and moving toward modernity. Bernardini gives particular attention to women writers and noncanonical writers often excluded from previous discussions of Whitman's Italian reception. The book is grounded in archival studies and examination of primary documents, which led to a series of noteworthy discoveries. While the main focus is on the Italian literary scene, the history of the reception retraced here is constantly evaluated in relation to other cultures that were also intent, in those same years, on reading and recreating Whitman. Studying Whitman's reception from a transnational perspective shows how many countries were simultaneously carving out a new modernity in literature and culture. In this sense, Bernardini not only shows the interconnectedness of various international agents in understanding and contributing to the spread of Whitman's work, but, more largely, a constellation of similar pre-modernist and modernist sensibilities. This stands in contrast to the notion of sudden innovation: modernity was not easy to achieve, and most of all, it did not imply a complete refusal of tradition. Instead, a continuous and fruitful negotiation between tradition and innovation, and not a sudden break with the literary past, is at the very heart of the Italian and transnational reception of Whitman"--

Le sue origini erano umili: suo padre Giuseppe era vetturino e sua madre, Vittoria Cornalba, tessitrice; passò l'infanzia nella portineria del palazzo dove la nonna, Peppina Panni, lavorava come custode presso la nobile famiglia Barni, legata un tempo al celebre mezzosoprano Giuditta Grisi, fino alla morte della quale era stata governante Peppina: sul rapporto tra Grisi e la sua famiglia, Ada costruirà il mito della propria infanzia. Morì nel 1945 e fu sepolta nel famedio di Milano. Il 3 aprile 1976 la sua tomba è stata traslata nell'antica Chiesa di San Francesco a Lodi.

Le solitarie sono la prima raccolta di prose scritta dalla poetessa Ada Negri e pubblicata nel 1917 da Treves, a Milano. Si tratta di 18 novelle imperniate perlopiù sul tema della condizione femminile tra fine Ottocento e inizio Novecento, attraverso brevi ma memorabili ritratti, dov'è facilmente individuabile l'origine socialista della scrittrice lodigiana. È uno dei primi documenti che si occupano così da vicino di alcuni problemi che troveranno la loro fortuna a Novecento inoltrato, ma che Ada anticipa con poeticità e vigore in questo e in altri suoi testi. Le solitarie sono una delle opere più rappresentative e rilevanti, artisticamente e tematicamente, della letteratura femminile dell'intero XX secolo; come tale, ebbe il giusto successo negli anni dieci fino alla Seconda guerra mondiale, ma, per motivi di censura politica da parte della critica, come a gran parte dell'opera di Negri, anche a Le solitarie toccò un lungo silenzio: ancora oggi il testo, come l'autrice, è tenuto lontano dal canone novecentesco. Il libro è aperto da una breve lettera/dedica a Margherita Sarfatti, nella quale l'autrice ricorda, in una prosa che si avvicina molto al linguaggio poetico negriano, i momenti della composizione delle novelle, trascorsi in compagnia della celebre amica, nella residenza in campagna di questa. Si leggono poi le 18 novelle.
