Toen de dagboeken van Etty Hillesum werden gepubliceerd, was het voor haar vrienden – voor zover nog in leven – een grote verrassing om haar gedachten te lezen over onderwerpen als God, schepping en mens, lot en geschiedenis, lijden en haat. Deze diversiteit aan onderwerpen vinden wij terug in haar dagboeken en brieven, en is ook één van de redenen waarom heel verschillende lezers zich in haar woorden kunnen terugvinden.
