Not illustrated. 1891 edition. Excerpt: ...to it I expect to devote my life's work." "I wish to play as well as I am capable of playing. To do this I must be familiar with musical literature, history, theory, and all that pertains to the art of music. As I grow older I know that my ideal will become higher, and I will always work to attain it." These replies provoked another question from me. "Do you intend to be a professional pianiste?" Ans. "I have not thought of it, and that is not what I am. studying for, but if I could succeed in making myself a great artist I might do so." She then added, with a look of disgust, " I would not teach the piano if I could be paid a hundred dollars a lesson." I do not know that these answers to my questions establish anything unusual, but they were of interest to me aa showing the bent of different minds and the aims of different pupils. These, I think, we should make the most careful study of. We must know our pupils' virtues, tastes, failings, aims and habits of study, or we work in the dark. Probably the most difficult problem we have before us is to teach the pupil to think. The most of them work with their eyes and fingers only. They study nothing but notes; bare notes. They see A on the staff and they hit A on the keyboard, and are inclined to be satisfied and to think they have done all that is to be expected of them. I fear sometimes that we overcrowd our pupils. In our anxiety for their rapid progress, together with their unappeasable appetite for something new, we are led to allow them, for each week's lesson, more than they can possibly do well, thus preventing them from fully mastering and digesting what they need as nutritious food necessary to a proper musical growth. A young lady came...

Excerpt: ...as much in the lessons as in our informal meetings, when--feeling free from the fetters of strict duty--they gave vent to their artistic impulses, unhampered by "didactical" considerations). Listly, all those young ladies need private lessons whose parents are either too rich, or too narrow (or both) to allow them to mingle with "the common herd"--in these horrid "classes;" they must take their lessons "at home," and, if possible, in the same parlor in which, ou the same evening, they will sit from 9 P.ii until 14 o'clock, with nothing but one poor young man for entertainment. Furthermore, invalids, and also those unfortunate "advanced" pupils who have to be "done all over again," need private lessons; but they are, after all, exceptions. I am through, ladies and gentlemen, and I feel keenly that I am open to the special criticism, among a great many others, that I have not established any dogmatic doctrine about class tuition; that I have not said whether it is good or not, without some conditions and "it's;" but such was my purpose. I merely wanted to offer you the results of my investigation and leave it to you to draw your own conclusions. I have not even mentioned that, as there are pupils unfit for class tuition, there are also teachers, some good, excellent teachers, entirely unfit for class teaching. Whether they are bewildered at the sight of more than one pupil, or too impractical to accommodate themselves to a given space of time, or too partial to their personal likings and dislikes of this or the other pupil, it matters not which; but it is an additional proof, that the question of class tuition is one of the many which do not admit of a dogmatic reply, ...

As America's geography and societal demands expanded, the topics in The Etude magazine (first published in 1883) took on such important issues as women in music; immigration; transportation; Native American and African American composers and their music; World War I and II; public schools; new technologies (sound recordings, radio, and television); and modern music (jazz, gospel, blues, early 20th century composers) in addition to regular book reviews, teaching advice, interviews, biographies, and advertisements. Though a valued source particularly for private music teachers, with the de-emphasis on the professional elite and the decline in salon music, the magazine ceased publication in 1957. This Index to the articles in The Etude serves as a companion to E. Douglas Bomberger¿s 2004 publication on the music in The Etude. Published a little over fifty years after the final issue reached the public, this Index chronicles vocal and instrumental technique, composer biographies, position openings, department store orchestras, the design of a successful music studio, how to play an accordion, recital programs in music schools, and much more. The Index is a valuable tool for research, particularly in the music culture of American in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. With titles of these articles available, the doors are now open for further research in the years to come. The Index is published in two parts and sold as a set for $250.00.

Chinese Mythology written by Anne Birrell and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-04-26 with History categories.

In Chinese Mythology, Anne Birrell provides English translations of some 300 representative myth narratives selected from over 100 classical texts, many of which have never before been translated into any Western language. Organizing the narratives according to themes and motifs common to world mythology, Birrell addresses issues of source, dating, attribution, textural variants, multiforms, and context. Drawing on exhaustive work in comparative mythology, she surveys the development of Chinese myth studies, summarizes the contribution of Chinese and Japanese scholars to the study of Chinese myth since the 1920s, and examines special aspects of traditional approaches to Chinese myth. The result is an unprecedented guide to the study of Chinese myth for specialists and nonspecialists alike.

Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ...necessitates a greater amount of dead, dry, hard work that never shows than any other science on earth, except perhaps chemistry. And the worst of it is that points of profoundest difficulty, costing four and five years for accomplishment, are whisked past the sight in four or five seconds at the concert performance, when the keenest ear can scarcely seize them. Really, the only way to be able to do the player justice would be to go over the same ground one's self, or to have listened to the five years of practice. Then, too, in regard to a woman player. Until a woman can play like a man she is treated as a musical puppet, no matter how solid her art motives may be. And the instant she does play like a man she loses a large part of that peculiar charm for both sexes which is the reward of her being exclusively feminine. Not that she loses the qualities, necessarily, but that she forfeits the privilege of profiting through them. Besides, the best music is seldom dramatic--that is, continuously dramatic. The very best compositions are subject to apparent holes and vacancies, more or less necessary, but by no means inspiring. To musicians even more or less effort of will is necessary to keep the attention through a classic sonata of three, four, or five stories, depending on the bearing of the whole and on the symmetry of their construction for intelligent apprehension. Masterly, indeed, the composer, and powerful the player, who can compel this attention without the effort of the listener I People will not allow an unidentified player to play these long novels.' And until he has played them now can he become identified? A woman without a big personal reputation dare not attempt the task. And where is she going to get her big reputation?...
