Depuis l'origine mythologique, la positivité d'un enseignement moral des lettres s'est imposée avant d'être théorisée en particulier par Aristote contre sa dévalorisation toujours possible (après Platon, on songe à celle de Rousseau). La question de l'enseignement littéraire des conflits moraux put alors venir au premier plan de l'herméneutique des mythes, légendes et fictions romanesques, notamment comme celle de la contradiction aigüe entre éthiques culturelles. Enfin, le modus moralis docendi de cet enseignement souvent conflictuel n'a pu que se trouver confronté par la suite aux trois autres modi significandi, également positifs : sens littéral, sens allégorique, sens anagogique de l'herméneutique scripturaire, et par suite, dans un contexte profane, de toute littérature. Ainsi : positivité enseignée contre négativité morale, conflictualité éthique cherchant une issue victorieuse, plurivocité intentionnant une hiérarchie morale des sens multiples, telles sont les directions majeures, plus ou moins dominantes selon les cas, qui orientent chacune des études ici proposées. Les lettres y sont entendues dans les trois acceptions traditionnelles du terme la littérature dans sa distinction vis-à-vis de la philosophie et de la science, mais aussi l'écriture vis-à-vis de la parole, et enfin la littéralité dans l'opposition habituelle de la lettre à l'esprit. --Quatrième de couverture.
