Excerpt from Etymologisches Wrterbuch der Griechischen Sprache: Mit Besonderer Bercksichtigung des Neuhochdeutschen und Einem Deutschen Wrterverzeichnis Im Anfang des Jahres 1887 forderten mich die geehrten Herren Verleger auf, ein etymologisches Lexicon, einmal der griechi schen, sodann der lateinischen Sprache von mssigem Umfange zu schreiben. Dasselbe sollte sich an weitere Kreise wenden und aus dieser Absicht ergaben sich mehrere Forderungen: 1) jedem fremden Worte seine deutsche Bedeutung hinzuzufgen, 2) die deutsche Muttersprache berall, wo es mglich war, mit zur Vergleichung heranzuziehen 3) bei jeder Gruppe verwandter Wrter die gemeinsame Wurzel mit ihrer Bedeutung mg lichst deutlich anzusetzen 4) die urgriechische Lautform zu er schliessen. Denn einem Philologen, der sich nur mit dem klassischen Altertum beschftigt und fr den es von grsster Wichtigkeit sein muss, die ursprngliche Lautform und Bedeu tung eines Wortes zu kennen, ist die blosse Gleichsetzung des' griechischen, sei es mit einem altindischen oder litauischen Worte, von recht geringem Werte.
