This is a scholarly contribution to an area -- the history of Greek geometrical analysis -- that is still insufficiently understood. At the time of Zeuthen, and even up to the middle of the last century, it was fashionable to treat the Data algebraically. Taisbak has abandoned this approach completely, arguing that it does nothing to help us to understand either the development of the work or the reasons for its having been copied, studied, and quoted for more than two millennia. We must bear a queer sort of frustration that affects us everywhere in the Data: we get very little information, hardly any 'knowledge' of the givens. And why not? Probably because 'knowing' geometrical objects was problematic in those days when the concept of 'given' came into being, and the consequences of incommensurability was just being understood. Next to nothing is known of these items, and very little that is worth knowing: length, size, distance -- any of the attributes that can be spoken of by means of numbers. Although there have been two recent translations of the Data, this one is unique in providing, as well, an extensive commentary, which provides the insights gained from three decades of studying the work. The book is meant as a coherent and understandable account of what could have been going on in Euclid's mind, and some reasons for believing that that is what actually was going on in his mind.

Excerpt from Girolamo Saccheri's Euclides Vindicatus The most beautiful theorem of geometry is Euclid, III. 31: The angle in a semicircle is a right angle. But Sac cheri's Proposition 18 is: According as an angle inscribed in a semicircle is right, obtuse or acute, the hypothesis of right, obtuse or acute angle is true. Euclid's Elements is acknowledged as the most influential writing on mathematics in the West at least till the end of the Middle Ages. Over the last thirty-six years several of the most important medieval Latin texts of the Elements have been edited. The most frequently used compilation remained, i.e. that of Campanus of Novara of the thirteenth century (before 1259). This version dominated Latin mathematics until printed editions were made from the Greek manuscripts in the sixteenth century. In 1482 the first printed edition of Euclid's Elements appeared in the redaction of Campanus, which was also the first printed mathematical book of any importance.

This first complete English language edition of Euclides vindicatus presents a corrected and revised edition of the classical English translation of Saccheri's text by G.B. Halsted. It is complemented with a historical introduction on the geometrical environment of the time and a detailed commentary that helps to understand the aims and subtleties of the work. Euclides vindicatus, written by the Jesuit mathematician Gerolamo Saccheri, was published in Milan in 1733. In it, Saccheri attempted to reform elementary geometry in two important directions: a demonstration of the famous Parallel Postulate and the theory of proportions. Both topics were of pivotal importance in the mathematics of the time. In particular, the Parallel Postulate had escaped demonstration since the first attempts at it in the Classical Age, and several books on the topic were published in the Early Modern Age. At the same time, the theory of proportion was the most important mathematical tool of the Galilean School in its pursuit of the mathematization of nature. Saccheri's attempt to prove the Parallel Postulate is today considered the most important breakthrough in geometry in the 18th century, as he was able to develop for hundreds of pages and dozens of theorems a system in geometry that denied the truth of the postulate (in the attempt to find a contradiction). This can be regarded as the first system of non-Euclidean geometry. Its later developments by Lambert, Bolyai, Lobachevsky and Gauss eventually opened the way to contemporary geometry. Occupying a unique position in the literature of mathematical history, Euclid Vindicated from Every Blemish will be of high interest to historians of mathematics as well as historians of philosophy interested in the development of non-Euclidean geometries.
