This is the first global study of the single most important intellectual and artistic movement in Brazilian cultural history before Modernism. The Indianist movement, under the direct patronage of the Emperor Pedro II, was a major pillar of the Empire's project of state-building, involving historians, poets, playwrights and novelists in the production of a large body of work extending over most of the nineteenth century. Tracing the parallel history of official indigenist policy and Indianist writing, Treece reveals the central role of the Indian in constructing the self-image of state and society under Empire. He aims to historicize the movement, examining it as a literary phenomenon, both with its own invented traditions and myths, and standing at the interfaces between culture and politics, between the Indian as imaginary and real. As this book demonstrates, the Indianist tradition was not merely an example of Romantic exoticism or escapism, recycling infinite variations on a single model of the Noble Savage imported from the European imaginary. Instead, it was a complex, evolving tradition, inextricably enmeshed with the contemporary political debates on the status of the indigenous communities and their future within the post-colonial state. These debates raised much wider questions about the legacy of colonial rule-the persistence of authoritarian models of government, the social and political marginalization of large numbers of free but landless Brazilians, and above all the maintenance of slavery. The Indianist stage offered the Indian alternately as tragic victim and exile, as rebel and outlaw, as alien to the social pact, as mother or protector of the post-colonial Brazilian family, or as self-sacrificing ally and voluntary slave.

El índice onomástico reviste doble función, en tanto procura operar simultáneamente como herramienta útil para manejarse con los seis tomos que componen la Historia comparada de las literaturas argentina y brasileña y también aspira a sistematizar aquello que los volúmenes inauguraron como estrategia de aproximación de culturas. La voluntad del equipo fue múltiple en este ejercicio tan infrecuente de organizar a modo de compendio lo que los sucesivos libros desplegaban: sintetizar, ordenar, corregir, destacar. El resultado es una modesta enciclopedia que repudia toda práctica de suficiencia para postularse como itinerario detallado de un recorrido auspicioso. Nombres propios, títulos de obras, fenómenos estéticos, circunstancias históricas: las diversas fichas no revisten el aspecto aséptico de entradas de diccionario, sino que exponen las razones que las convocan y revelan el modo en que intervienen en la composición del conjunto. Tales rasgos configuran, en la articulación regida por el azar ortográfico que exige un instrumento como el presente, el catálogo que cubre doscientos años de indagación propuesto a partir de un índice en el que el entusiasmo no vaciló en desafiar al rigor y merced a un método que es antes construcción trabajosa pero indeclinable que revelación calculada y pretenciosa.

Este momento de la historia se corresponde a la expansión y consolidación de varios fenómenos que se difundieron a través de las industrias culturales en auge. De ese amplio catálogo participan la crítica instalada como género, los coletazos del boom de los 60 que redundan en el despliegue de un público lector creciente (con Cortázar y Amado como autores emblemáticos), la historieta en tanto cruce de códigos que da cuenta del contexto social y político (Mafalda y Mónica) y el cine que abandona los cánones comerciales para alternar entre el documentalismo de Birri y la creación original de Glauber Rocha. En otro orden, América Latina es centro irradiador de la Teología de la Liberación, que encuentra en Argentina y Brasil acaso su origen, o al menos sus enunciadores más relevantes. Algo similar ocurre en el plano musical, donde el rock –con aditamentos locales que le proveen un sesgo tanguero o un aire de bossa nova-- se equipara a la poesía. Así, mientras en la letras de las canciones prolifera la subjetividad del habitante urbano, en la obra de las grandes poetas, que tienen en Pizarnik y Hilst sus nombres mayores, se inscribe la subjetividad astillada o provocadora. Son la contracara de la mirada sobre la ciudad sitiada que abruma en la narrativa de Soriano y Fonseca y cuyo correlato marginal se impone en Ferréz y Cucurto en el recorrido que propone el volumen final de esta colección.
