What the love of wisdom is and how it enables us to live in today`s world are explored in this ambitious work. Rich insights into what human maturity means and how it is reached have become too easily lost or confined to the world of high academia. Well-being, the true goal of human being, has been tragically reduced to `happiness` and its meanings lost. No subject could be more important, and few modern works deal with it that are not religious, dogmatic and furtively proselytising. Profound ideas are here applied to such unlikely things as skateboarding, love-making, getting rich, tourism and playing cricket, all of which can become a means to the development of mental strength and genuine love. Post-religious spirituality, clarified here, is the development of the psyche, which is as important as finding or losing oneself, and winning or losing in the arena of living. In the age of fiction our lives are enriched by myriad vital stories, personally loved, and also endowed with wider meanings through living in the shared master story for today, the incomplete saga of the salvation of the planet. Radical implications for education, human communication, politics and a sustainable future permeate the text, which calls upon authoritative voices from recent times and the deeper past, from Socrates to Habermas. from Judaism and Christianity to Islam and the traditions of the East. This is no mere history, but the building of a radical approach to human spirituality, lifestyle, communication and life-goals. Although the way is hard, deliverance from the darkness of consumerism, the pressure of rivalry, and confusion about ultimate goals is offered in this book. The thorough bibliography and referencing enable the reader to pursue a wide range of topics, and render the work suitable for the hard-pressed student as well as readers-for-leisure.

The Eudemian Ethics and the De Virtutibus et Vitiis have not received much attention from scholars. Mr. Ross’s suggestions have been of the greatest use to me; Fritzsche’s commentary I have sometimes referred to with advantage, and also to some notes printed by Prof. Henry Jackson and kindly sent me by him some years ago. Prof. Jackson is also the author of an article in the Journal of Philology, xxxii, which has shed a flood of light on the corrupt passage, Bk. VII, chs. 13, 14. Of course the principal help to the understanding of the two treatises is the Nicomachean Ethics, their resemblances to and differences from which work are of great interest. Aeterna Press

Handbook Of Eudaimonic Well Being written by Joar Vittersø and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-18 with Social Science categories.

This handbook presents the most comprehensive account of eudaimonic well-being to date. It brings together theoretical insights and empirical updates presented by leading scholars and young researchers. The handbook examines philosophical and historical approaches to the study of happy lives and good societies, and it critically looks at conceptual controversies related to eudaimonia and well-being. It identifies the elements of happiness in a variety of areas such as emotions, health, wisdom, self-determination, internal motivation, personal growth, genetics, work, leisure, heroism, and many more. It then places eudaimonic well-being in the larger context of society, addressing social elements. The most remarkable outcome of the book is arguably its large-scale relevance, reminding us that the more we know about the good way of living, the more we are in a position to build a society that can be supportive and offer opportunities for such a way of living for all of its citizens.

Daniel C. Russell presents a new account of happiness and how to live a good life. It is not only fulfilling for us as humans and individuals, but inseparable from what makes us who we are.

Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics" is considered to be one of the most important treatises on ethics ever written. In an incredibly detailed study of virtue and vice in man, Aristotle examines one of the most central themes to man, the nature of goodness itself. In Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics," he asserts that virtue is essential to happiness and that man must live in accordance with the "doctrine of the mean" (the balance between excess and deficiency) to achieve such happiness.

As children, we learn life is unfair: bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people. So, it is natural to ask, "Why play fairly in an unfair world? If being immoral will get you what you want and you know you can't get caught, why not do it?" The answers, as argued herein, begin by rejecting the idea that morality and happiness are at odds with one another. From this point of view, we can see how immorality undermines its perpetrator's happiness: self-respect is necessary for happiness, and immorality undermines self-respect. As we see how our self-respect is conditional upon how we respect others, we learn to evaluate and value ourselves, and others, appropriately. The central thesis is the result of combining the ancient Greek conception of happiness (eudaimonia) with a modern conception of self-respect. We become happy, we life the best life we can, only by becoming virtuous: by being as courageous, just, temperate, and wise as can be. These are the virtues of happiness. This book explains why it is bad to be bad and good to be good, and what happens to people's values as their practical rationality develops.

"The nature of well-being has been a subject of long-standing concern in psychology. Much of the work on the topic has been directed toward subjective accounts of well-being. The contributors to this volume, in varying ways, have sought to expand the understanding of well-being beyond subjective indices, directing the attention of the field to psychological qualities that are now subsumed under the umbrella of eudaimonic functioning. As part of the growth of positive psychology, the past decade has seen a marked increase in attention paid to distinctions between hedonic and eudaimonic concepts. This book is devoted to exploring the breadth of theory and research regarding eudaimonic well-being, in order to help us better understand where this field has been, where it is now, and what may be possible in the future. Another of the goals underlying the construction of this book was the prospect of increasing dialogue between psychologists and philosophers on themes of mutual interest. This book is intended for a broad audience in the social sciences with an interest in the nature of happiness and well-being and in the empirical research that has been conducted with the goal of better understanding what constitutes a life well lived"--Preface. The Morality Of Happiness written by Julia Annas and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-08-19 with Philosophy categories.

Ancient ethical theories, based on the notions of virtue and happiness, have struck many as an attractive alternative to modern theories. But we cannot find out whether this is true until we understand ancient ethics--and to do this we need to examine the basic structure of ancient ethical theory, not just the details of one or two theories. In this book, Annas brings together the results of a wide-ranging study of ancient ethical philosophy and presents it in a way that is easily accessible to anyone with an interest in ancient or modern ethics. She examines the fundamental notions of happiness and virtue, the role of nature in ethical justification and the relation between concern for self and concern for others. Her careful examination of the ancient debates and arguments shows that many widespread assumptions about ancient ethics are quite mistaken. Ancient ethical theories are not egoistic, and do not depend for their acceptance on metaphysical theories of a teleological kind. Most centrally, they are recognizably theories of morality, and the ancient disputes about the place of virtue in happiness can be seen as akin to modern disputes about the demands of morality.
