Wie die Auseinandersetzung eine solch zerstörerische Dynamik erhalten konnte, ist die Frage, die im Zentrum des Buches steht. Da eine Friedenslösung im Reich ausblieb, wirkten die Krisenherde im europäischen Umfeld schrittweise und ungehindert ins Reich hinein. So erreichte der Krieg seine verheerendste Eskalationsstufe und wurde endgültig zu einem europäischen Konflikt. Europäisch waren auch die Kriegsführung, die Zusammensetzung der Söldnerarmeen und schließlich der Friedenskongress, mit dem der Krieg beendet wurde. Ein neue und schlüssigere Antwort auf die Frage, warum sich das Kriegsgeschehen in Deutschland scheinbar unaufhaltsam - gerade in den späteren Jahren des Krieges - mit anderen tiefgreifenden Konflikten in Europa verband, ergibt sich aus den internationalen Forschungen der letzten Jahre.
