Relations between Muslims and the public education systems of Europe are often characterised by tensions. There is often still a perceived incompatibility between the claims of individual Muslims or Muslim communities on the one hand and the aims of public education in Europe on the other. The relatively recent presence of Islam in much of Europe, the internal diversity of Muslim communities, the lack of a centralized, hierarchical church-like structure – different arguments are used to justify such a discriminatory treatment of one of the largest faith communities in Europe. Nevertheless, as this book aims to illustrate, there are already rich and diverse experiences throughout Europe of how to integrate Islam into the national and regional school systems, particularly in primary, but also in secondary education. Accordingly, this book provides some analyses of the ways in which Islam is integrated in education in certain regions of Spain, the Netherlands, France and England. These analyses are paralleled by empirical findings concerning the role of religion in the life of young Muslims, their views concerning religion in school, and the impact of religion in education and society in Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Germany, France and England.

Dabei kommt dem Umstand, dass das osteurop ische Land direkt an die Russische F deration grenzt, keine geringe Bedeutung zu. Zwar geh rt rein offiziell die multivektorale Schaukelpolitik im stlichen EU-Nachbarland der Vergangenheit an, jedoch ist die Durchsetzung eines einheitlichen au enpolitischen Kurses nicht unproblematisch. Das vorliegende Buch widmet sich dem Thema "Die Ukraine und die Europ ische Union: Stand und Perspektiven bilateraler Beziehungen." Die Gliederung des Werkes umfasst sechs Kapitel. Zun chst wird einleitend auf die vertragsrechtlichen Grundlagen sowie den institutionellen Rahmen der EU-Ukraine-Beziehungen eingegangen. Des Weiteren werden die Folgen der Verschiebung der EU-Au engrenze Richtung Osten unter besonderer Ber cksichtigung der Erweiterung des Schengen-Raums f r die Bev lkerung auf beiden Seiten dargestellt. Zur Charakterisierung der Politik im deutschen Bundesstaat werden seit Ende der 1960er Jahre vor allem zwei Begriffe verwendet, die die Entwicklungstendenzen des bundesstaatlichen Ordnungsprinzips am ehesten beschreiben: Politikverflechtung und F”deralismus. Im Rahmen der Koordination und Kooperation der verschiedenen staatlichen Akteure ist ein komplexes Netzwerk von sich berschneidenden Zust„ndigkeiten, Koordinationsmustern sowie formellen und informellen Mitsprachebefugnissen entstanden. Vor dem Hintergrund des voranschreitenden europ„ischen Integrationsprozesses stellt sich fr die bundesdeutschen L„nder die Frage, wie sie auf die Europapolitik des Bundes und auf die politischen Entscheidungen, die auf europ„ischer Ebene getroffen werden, Einfluss nehmen k”nnen. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei stets die Intention, den durch den europ„ischen Integrationsprozess erlittenen Kompetenzverlust auszugleichen und m”glichst das Heft des Handelns in der Hand zu behalten. The development of EU enlargement has raised many thorny issues unanticipated by the framers of the EC Treaty. A significant upshot of these issues is that the concept of European identity – defined in terms of such factors as culture, history and economics – has supplanted the long-dominant theme of ‘widening and deepening,’ particularly since the Union’s expansion has become primarily eastward. The major contribution of this important book lies in its analysis of the conceptualization and perception of enlargement from various points of view, focusing on the concerns of stakeholders and the ‘identity’ conflicts and uncertainties incurred by enlargement initiatives. In the course of its presentation, it details the actual pre-accession Europeanization process and its complex history. Among the key elements discussed are the following: the conflict between ‘widening’ and ‘deepening’ and the effect on EU institutional reform; institutional requirements on candidate countries; pre-accession criteria and negotiations; administrative capacity, judicial capacity, and legal approximation in accession states; capacity of the EU to absorb new Member States; and EC law as part of European identity. Also covered are specific historical details of particular pre-accession negotiations (e.g., Greece, Spain, Portugal, Malta, and Cyprus), the still inconclusive negotiations with Turkey and the Western Balkan states, and political factors involved in the non-accession of Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. Assembling powerful evidence and applying incisive analysis, the author’s conclusion shows that, absent further (and major) EU institutional reform, it will be difficult for an enlarging Union to continue to ‘deliver the goods.’ A watershed in the continuing great debate on the fulfilment of the EC Treaty’s determination to foster and promote ‘an ever closer union of the peoples of Europe,’ this book will prove invaluable to anybody interested in the European integration project, particularly lawyers, academics, officials and policymakers in the EU Member States.
