Por el contrario, el presente libro, Europa a examen, ofrece una reflexión sobre la realidad europea, reconociendo que Europa es un eidos realizado en el tiempo, una cultura única y peculiar, que dura ya casi tres milenios. A la tarea de indagar el origen de Europa, su formación y desarrollo, sus avatares y crisis, se enfrentan ocho profesores universitarios, de siete universidades y de cinco países, con la intención de ofrecer diversas perspectivas. En este libro no se pretende hacer una arqueología de Europa, antes bien todas las investigaciones que aquí se presentan se han realizado con una intención de futuro: arrojar un poco de luz en la construcción de Europa. Podría pensarse que el conocimiento de la realidad cultural –incluso filosófica– de Europa ayuda poco a su construcción. Sin embargo, en las investigaciones subyacentes a este libro, surgió más bien lo contrario: es absolutamente necesario saber qué es Europa, de dónde ha nacido, cuáles son sus tradiciones, cuáles sus elementos esenciales permanentes, si queremos hallar el hilo conductor, la guía que nos permita seguir hacia delante. La cuestión radical a la que se enfrenta el presente texto es saber quiénes somos nosotros los europeos y qué es lo que queremos ser. Se ofrece, pues, un libro que toca muchos registros y aspectos que ayudarán a reflexionar sobre lo que fue, es y debe ser Europa.
