Europa hasta mediados del siglo XV se llamaba a sí misma Cristiandad, manejando dos conceptos esenciales: Uno, universitas cristiana, es decir comunidad sometida a valores morales que están por encima de la actividad personal; otro, res publica cristiana, es decir, el bien común que es el que debe perseguir todo poder político. Sobre estas bases se edificó una cultura, que era la síntesis de tres elementos: la trascendencia heredada de Israel, el ius que es patrimonio romano y el valor de la persona humana que había defendido el helenismo. Por esta causa, periódicamente, se estaba intentando un renacimiento, es decir, una reactivación del patrimonio heredado. A partir del siglo X, Europa fue capaz de remontar los daños que acompañaron la caída del Imperio Romano, elevándose al primer rango de las culturas mundiales, por eso después todas han tenido que tomarla como ejemplo, aceptando sus logros.
