Providing a comprehensive and engaging account of personal unions, composite monarchies and multiple rule in premodern Europe: Unions and Divisions. New Forms of Rule in Medieval and Renaissance Europe uses a comparative approach to examine the phenomena of the medieval and renaissance unions in a pan-European overview. In the later Middle Ages, genealogical coincidences led to caesuras in various dynastic successions. Solutions to these were found, above all, in new constellations which saw one political entity becoming co-managed by the ruler of another in the form of a personal union. In the premodern period, such solutions were characterised by two factors in particular: on the one hand, the entry of two countries into a union did not constitute a military annexation — even though claims to the throne were all too often imposed by force; on the other hand, the new unitarian constellation retained, at least de jure, the independence of its respective components. The twenty-four essays, ranging in scope from Scandinavia to Iberia, from England and France to Central and Eastern Europe, examine whether the respective unions were the result of careful planning and deliberations in the face of a long-foreseen succession crisis or whether they emerged from dynamic developments that were largely reactive and dependent upon various random factors and circumstances. Each union is assessed to provide an understanding, for students and researchers, of the political and social forces involved in the respective countries and investigates how the unions were reflected in contemporary literature (pamphlets, memoranda, chronicles, diaries etc.), propaganda and in legal and historical discourses. This volume is essential reading for students and researchers interested in the history of monarchy, political history and social and cultural histories in premodern Europe.

The autonomy granted to local communities (such as towns, municipalities, and city-states) by larger, central powers (such as empires, kings, lords, and central states) is a recurrent feature of European history over time, from Antiquity to the contemporary period. This volume explores the political, social, and cultural aspects of this feature in a diachronic and comparative perspective, from the Roman Empire to today's city partnerships. To this end, it uses the concept of polycentric governance. Originally developed by political economist Vincent Ostrom in the 1960s and then expanded by the 2009 winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, political scientist Elinor Ostrom, this concept characterises the interdependent system of relations between different actors involved in a process and, for that reason, it is frequently used in policy studies. This volume applies the concept of polycentric governance to historical studies as a heuristic device to analyse the multilayer systems into which cities were integrated at various points in European history, as well as the implications of the coexistence of different political structures. Fourteen chapters examine the structures, the dynamics, and the discourse of polycentric governance through various case studies from the Roman Empire, from medieval towns, from early modern Europe, and from contemporary cities. The volume suggests that for extended periods of time throughout European history, polycentric governance has played a pivotal role in the organisation and distribution of political power.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2021 im Fachbereich Geschichte Europas - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Hausarbeit soll sich als Überblicksdarstellung der Gründungsgeschichte der Familie, sowie der Machtsicherung der frühen Habsburger befassen. Da eine Behandlung aller Habsburger des Mittelalters diesen Rahmen sprengen würde, liegt der Fokus auf den ersten drei römisch-deutschen Königen aus dem Haus Habsburg. Der erste Teil befasst sich mit den ersten Habsburgern. Woher kamen sie und was kann man über sie wissen? Hierbei sollen auch die Abstammungsmystik und die genealogischen Besonderheiten der Habsburger behandelt werden. Welche Gründe hatten sie, sich als Nachfahren römischer Patrizierfamilien oder alttestamentlicher Propheten darzustellen? Anschließend wird der erste Habsburger auf dem römisch-deutschen Thron näher untersucht. Woher kam er und welche Gründe gab es, einen so „einfachen Grafen“ mit einer solchen Würde zu versehen? Hierbei wird klar, wie die Habsburger in den Bereich der Welt kamen, für den sie heute bekannt sind. Ein weiterer Teil hierbei ist die Machtsicherung und Machterweiterung Rudolfs. Hierbei wird auf seine Heiratspolitik, Territorialpolitik und sein Verhalten als König eingegangen. Anschließend geht es um die letzten Königsjahre Rudolfs, sein Nachfolgeproblem und um eine Bilanz seiner Herrschaft. Der dritte Teil widmet sich seinem Nachfolger Albrecht I. (ca. 1255-1308). Auch hierbei wird ein Fokus auf die Heirats- und Territorialpolitik gelegt. Wie kam es, dass Albrecht erst nicht zum König gewählt wurde aber später doch die Krone für sein Haus zurückzugewinnen konnte und was hat seine Heiratspolitik hiermit zu tun? Friedrich „der Schöne“ ist anschließend der letzte Habsburger, der in dieser Hausarbeit behandelt wird. Er war Teil einer Doppelwahl aber auch Teil eines gemeinschaftlichen Königtums. Als er 1330 starb, verloren die Habsburger die römische Königskrone für mehr als ein Jahrhundert. Zum Schluss soll ein Fazit gezogen werden, wie die ersten Habsburger ihre neu gewonnene Macht ausbauten und sicherten.
