"The Penguin History of Europe series... is one of contemporary publishing's great projects."--New Statesman It was an age of hope and possibility, of accomplishment and expansion. Europe's High Middle Ages spanned the Crusades, the building of Chartres Cathedral, Dante's Inferno, and Thomas Aquinas. Buoyant, confident, creative, the era seemed to be flowering into a true renaissance-until the disastrous fourteenth century rained catastrophe in the form of plagues, famine, and war. In Europe in the High Middle Ages, William Chester Jordan paints a vivid, teeming landscape that captures this lost age in all its glory and complexity. Here are the great popes who revived the power of the Church against the secular princes; the writers and thinkers who paved the way for the Renaissance; the warriors who stemmed the Islamic tide in Spain and surged into Palestine; and the humbler estates, those who found new hope and prosperity until the long night of the 1300s. From high to low, from dramatic events to social structures, Jordan's account brings to life this fascinating age. Part of the Penguin History of Europe series, edited by David Cannadine.

Excerpt from Europe in the Middle Age The greatest factor in the progress of man has been his ability experience - the achievements, the successes, and even the failures - of the generations that have preceded him. One generation stands on the shoulders of that which went before. It does not have to puzzle over the problems which its predecessor has solved. It need not follow the tortuous path of effort and failure which is predecessor followed. It need not expend its energy in inventing what has already been invented, in discovering what has already been discovered. The hardwon achievements of the past become stepping-stones to something greater and better. Every age builds on, and with, the yesterdays of the race. of all creatures man alone is able to appropriate and to profit by the experiences of his kind. Else he would be as the beast of the field, and progress would be impossible for him. The knowledge and appreciation of the best things that have been said and done should not only make a man cultured; they should also give him the best preparation for a life of higher and greater achievement. Does the study of his need any further justification? Does the twentieth century have less need of a knowledge of the Middle Age than of the nineteenth century? Indeed the nineteenth century gets its true perspective only when seen in its proper relation with the precedent centuries. Of the utmost importance is it, therefore, that the achievements - intellectual, morel, spiritual, and material - the legacy, of an age should be passed on without diminution successor. For only when an age enters fully and freely on its heritage can it carry on the work of civilization at an accelerated speed. For most students in medieval studies, Eastern Europe is marginal and East European topics simply exotica. A peculiar form of Orientalism may thus be responsible for the exclusion of the Avars, Bulgars, Khazars, and Cumans from the medieval history of the European continent. This collection of studies is an attempt to stimulate research in a comparative mode and to open up a broader discussion about such key themes as material culture, ethnicity, historical memory, or conversion in the context of social and political developments in early medieval Europe. Another goal of this volume is to introduce a number of new approaches to the study of what is known as “medieval nomads.” Without explicitly rejecting the model of raid vs. trade famously introduced by Anatoly Khazanov, many contributions in this volume shift the emphasis on internal developments that have received until now little or no attention. Contributors are: Tivadar Vida, Peter Stadler, Péter Somogyi, Uwe Fiedler, Orsolya Heinrich-Tamaska, Bartłomiej Szymon Szmoniewski, Florin Curta, Valeri Iotov, Veselina Vachkova, Tsvetelin Stepanov, Dimitri Korobeinikov, and Victor Spinei.
