Communities great and small across Europe for eight centuries have contracted with doctors. Physicians provided citizen care, helped govern, and often led in public life. Civic Medicine stakes out this timely subject by focusing on its golden age, when cities rivaled territorial states in local and global Europe and when civic doctors were central to the rise of shared, organized written information about the human and natural world. This opens the prospect of a long history of knowledge and action shaped more by community and responsibility than market or state, exchange or power.

The mobility of health professionals affects the performance of health systems, and increasingly so since the European Union (EU) enlargements in 2004 and 2007. This publication presents research on the gaps in knowledge about the numbers, trends, impacts and policy responses to this dynamic situation, in particular in Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Conducted within the framework of the European Commission s Health PROMeTHEUS project, the research posed a set of questions of key interest to policy-makers: * What are the scale and characteristics of health professional mobility in the EU? * What have been the effects of EU enlargement? * What are the motivations of the mobile workforce? * What are the resulting impacts on health system performance? * What is the policy relevance of those impacts? * What are the policy options to address health professional mobility issues? In answering these questions, this publication offers policymakers evidence of the nature and extent of health professional mobility in the EU, analyzes its impact on country health systems and outlines some major policy strategies to address mobility.

"...only by effective legislation can the general public be adequately protected from exploitation by an army of ill-trained doctors, quacks, and charlatans." -Henry S. Pritchett, Introduction to Medical Education in Europe (1912) Medical Education in Europe (1912) by Abraham Flexner presents further research by the author following his landmark study of medical education in the US and Canada in The Flexner Report (1910), also available from Cosimo Reports. The report contains Flexner's insightful assessment of medical institutions in England, Scotland, the German Empire, Austria, and France. Flexner's call for more rigid standards heavily influenced the European medical community. Funded by The Carnegie Foundation, this book-length report is for those interested in education and the medical world abroad.

Renaissance Medicine written by Vivian Nutton and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-07 with History categories.

This volume offers a comprehensive historical survey of medicine in sixteenth-century Europe and examines both medical theories and practices within their intellectual and social context. Nutton investigates the changes brought about in medicine by the opening-up of the European world to new drugs and new diseases, such as syphilis and the Sweat, and by the development of printing and more efficient means of communication. Chapters examine how civic institutions such as Health Boards, hospitals, town doctors and healers became more significant in the fight against epidemic disease, and special attention is given to the role of women and domestic medicine. The final section, on beliefs, explores the revised Galenism of academic medicine, including a new emphasis on anatomy and its most vocal antagonists, Paracelsians. The volume concludes by considering the effect of religious changes on medicine, including the marginalisation, and often expulsion, of non-Christian practitioners. Based on a wide reading of primary sources from literature and art across Europe, Renaissance Medicine is an invaluable resource for students and scholars of the history of medicine and disease in the sixteenth century.

Medical Education In Europe written by Abraham Flexner and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-07 with Education categories.

Excerpt from Medical Education in Europe: A Report to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching IN June, 1910, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching published a report on medical education in the United States and Canada.1 This report not only dealt with the conditions Of the medical schools in the United States and Canada, but also attempted an analysis of the problem of medical education. The publication of that report met with immediate response not only from the teachers of medicine in America, but from the medical profession itself, and there was a prompt suggestion that the Foundation continue the work thus begun by a study of medical education in leading European nations. The present report on medical education in the German Empire, Austria, France, England, and Scotland is therefore the outcome Of the first report on medical education in the United States and Canada, and is to a very large extent a necessary supplement to it. It has been carried out under the direction of the Foundation by Mr. Abraham Flexner, who made the previous report. Its plan follows essentially the general plan adopted in the former bulletin. First, there is given an historical statement, which attempts in brief compass to describe the background upon which modern medical education in Europe is to be studied, and the point of departure from which the present undertaking is begun. Like its prede cessor, this report concerns itself thereupon with the basis of medical education and the relation of education in medicine to the general system of schools. It considers next the laboratory branches, and following these in succession the clinical studies and the hospital as related to the problem of practical clinical training. Adhering also to the course previously pursued, the author has taken up later the financial aspects Of medical education, medical sects, postgraduate education, and the medical train ing of women. Throughout, the influence of university status on medical education is contrasted with the influence of proprietary conditions.
