This book is a revised translation of two works by Miroslav Hroch, which together form a pioneering comparative analysis of the various struggles for national identity in nineteenth-century Europe. It is concerned with the decisive phase of 'national renaissance', when small groups of committed patriots successfully generated mass support. When and why was their propaganda effective? The author attempts to answer this fundamental question by locating the patriots within the contemporary social structure, and uses data derived from many different nationalisms. The work is divided into three sections; a theoretical examination of the origins of nationalism and nation-hood, a quantitative survey of the social and territorial structure of the patriots of eight representative national movements, and a comparative analysis of the social and professional groups that formed the milieu of patriotism. Numerous statistical tables and maps illuminate the text, which forms one of the most significant studies of the nationalist phenomenon to be published in recent years.

This European Policy analysis traces and reflects on the development of social policy and governance at EU level during and after the adoption of the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR) at the Social Summit in Gothenburg in November 2017. Scepticism initially abounded about the potential of this non-binding declaration and its lofty promises to instigate a substantive shift in ‘Social Europe’ in the shadow of the eurozone crisis. However, David Bokhorst and Sven Schreurs consider the long list of directives, recommendations, funding instruments and changes to the system of European soci oeconomic governance adopted since Gothenburg, and they find, contrary to the initial scepticism, that the EU has, in fact, consolidated its role as a ‘holding environment for flourishing national welfare states’. Questions remain about the effective implementation of EU social policy commitments on the ground, but the authors argue that Social Europe is neither impossible nor a paper tiger with limited significance. Although political developments can be volatile and derail the continuation of the EU social agenda, their examination provides reasons for thinking that this revival of Social Europe will prove to be durable.

The main argument of this book is that the revival of European integration in the mid-1980s and the emergence of a "New Europe" have to be analyzed against the background of globalization and the transnational restructuing of social forces since the early 1970s.

This book deconstructs the myth of progressive liberalism. The author explores left-wing ideals of equality, diversity, social justice and open society, and exposes them as empty fiction. The fate of modern civilization rests solely on the shoulders of men and women willing to defend it. After the European colonial age, the discovery of the New World, the Industrial Revolution and the establishment of the modern West, Western man has arrived at a crisis. Has he exhausted himself like Goethe's Faust? Should he end his quest for greatness and let others take charge of the world he built? Should he dissolve his ego and hide himself in the safe comfort of anonymous masses? Or should he, at long last, unleash his suppressed potential? High on a cocktail of sugar, nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, antidepressants, penicillin and other drugs, people have fallen into a collective trance. Like the light at the end of the tunnel, the drunk masses think they are approaching eternal paradise on Earth, but in reality they are marching towards the abyss of their extinction. Only those foreseeing souls who have the courage to return their people to more traditional lifestyles, only those who are willing to break away from mass humanity, only they may jump the abyss and cheat destiny.

Urban heritage, which is part of the conceptual expansion of cultural heritage, has become an extraordinarily complex notion. Any aspect of urban life and experience can become heritage and this heritage is then continuously reinterpreted and exploited as a source not only for a city’s identification but also for its cultural and economic innovation. This book provides a detailed overview of Central European urban heritage. It examines the key aspects of urban heritage –tangible/monumental, natural/landscape, world heritage/urban quarter and heritage experience/dark heritage. The ‘regimes of urban heritage’ approach retraces 200 years of the development of European urban heritage to understand how it has become so significant and how it could integrate practically every area of urban existence. The novelty of the book is the interpretation of this development as a process of successive and integrating regimes, which are examined through the changing urban heritage agency and discourse. Through the examples of European cities and towns, such as Belgrade, Budapest, Gdansk, Krakow, Ljubljana, Subotica, Szentendre, Vienna, but also Edinburgh, Nordic cities and Rome, these changes reveal their inner complexities and become comparable in an interdisciplinary analysis. Further, a particular aspect of the history of these cities is revealed through the development of their own urban heritage. The book is primarily aimed at academics, researchers and postgraduate students of cultural and economic geography, cultural history, culture and heritage management, modern and contemporary history as well as urban history, planning and sociology.

The European Union could soon be a thing of the past. Xenophobia is rampant and commonly reflected in elections across the continent. Great Britain may hold a referendum on whether to abandon the union altogether. Spurred by anti-EU sentiments due to the euro crisis, national interests conflict with a shared vision for the future of Europe. Is it too late to preserve the union that generated unprecedented peace for more than half a century? This is no mere academic question with limited importance for America and the rest of the world. In the past decade, the EU has declined from a unified global power to a fractious confederation of states with staggering unemployment resentfully seeking relief from a reluctant Germany. If the EU collapses and the former member states are transformed again from partners into rivals, the US and the world will confront the serious economic and political consequences that follow. In a series of revealing interviews conducted by Dr. Gregor Peter Schmitz, George Soros -- a man of vast European experience whose personal past informs his present concerns -- offers trenchant commentary and concise, prescriptive advice: The euro crisis was not an inevitable consequence of integration, but a result of avoidable mistakes in politics, economics, and finance; and excessive faith in the self-regulating financial markets that Soros calls market fundamentalism inspired flawed institutional structures that call out for reform. Despite the considerable perils of this period, George Soros maintains his faith in the European Union as a model of open society. This book is a testament to his vision for a peaceful and productive Europe.

Reiterated international comparative surveys offer evidences about developments of religion-related scene in Central and Eastern Europe. The present volume is the first one, which presents an extensive and detailed cross-national analysis of sociological data comparing extensively countries, regions and denominations in the past two decades. It displays achievements and shortages of a religious revival in the post-communist region, as well as religion’s role in family life, social responsibility and public commitment. It proves the combination of de-Christianization based on previous persecution of religion and an ongoing modernization and the rise and the transformation of religion. In some countries popular religiosity of traditional social strata is dominant. In other countries there is a visible transition from old and low strata religiosity to a more restricted but socially more influential religiosity of young middle and upper strata groups. In final outcome the volume substantiates the growing public role of religion in Eastern and Central Europe as well as the distinct impact of religiosity on individual behaviour. These results contradict the idea of an overwhelming secularization but argue for a more complex process overcoming the communist past.

The Road To Social Europe written by Jean-Claude Barbier and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-12 with Social Science categories.

In the wake of the Greek and Irish crises, and at a moment when solidarity between states is hotly debated on a daily basis at EU level, it is important to understand how ‘solidarity’ can happen at all. The Road to Social Europe reviews the development of political cultural processes since the nineteenth century, showing how social protection and social justice have gradually become interwoven with systems of social protection, or welfare states. Grounded on extensive empirical research conducted in many EU countries and in the European Commission’s administration over twenty years, the book provides a cultural analysis of welfare systems in Europe. It also presents an original enquiry into the importance of languages for politics in Europe, for the politics of welfare, and for sociological research. It shows how sociological and ethnographic analysis can help in understanding the current and future challenges of European integration that rely unilaterally on functional economics. This in-depth sociological analysis of European diversity will appeal to a wide audience of students and scholars of sociology, political science, political economy and European studies.
