This excellent school has been altogether too much slighted; but Shirley has met with a more than usual portion of neglect, and even Mr. Lamb, though otherwise a judicious critic, speaks of him in no very favourable terms. "Shirley," he observes, "claims a place amongst the worthies of this period, not so much for any transcendant genius in himself, as that he was the last of a great race, all of whom spoke nearly the same language, and had a set of moral feelings and actions in common."
