En el campo experimental temporalero de la Universidad Autonoma de Chapingo, Mex. ubicado sobre el parteaguas SW de la cuenca del rio Tezcoco, se realizo el presente trabajo con la finalidad de evaluar las diferentes practicas de conservacion del suelo y del agua con base en su efectividad para reducir las perdidas de suelo y nutrimentos, generar los coefientes de eficiencia que reflejan la capacidad de las obras para reducir la erosion, determinar el efecto de esas practicas sobre el rendimiento de maiz engrano y finalmente obtener el analisis economico de las obr as con base en los beneficios y costos que implica su estabelecimento y operacion. Los tratamientos se seleccionaron con base en aspectos economicos, operativos y al tipo de obra mas comunmente empleados en los programas de conservacion de suelos en Mexico. Las praticas seleccionadas fueron las seguientes: 1. Testigo - surcos rectos perpendiculares a la pendiente principal del terreno. 2. Surcado al contorno. 3. Terraza de base angosta SARH. 4. Terraza de base angosta CP. 5. Terraza de banco. Para poder lograr los objetivos de la experimentacion - hubo necesidad de establecer parcelas de 0.703 ha por lo que solo se emplearon dos repeticones bajo un diseno completamente al azar. Para disenar la capacidad de los canales de conduccion, del sistema de muestreo y el drenaje del area experimental, se calculo el escurrimiento maximo esperado con un periodo de retorno de 5 anos con base en el metodo racional modificado. En la presente obra se expone el efecto reductor de la cobertura vegetal y de raices de cultivos agricolas (maiz, frijol, calabacita y avena) sobre el proceso erosivo del suelo y agua en parcelas experimentales de temporal. En estas fue considerado el manejo convencional de suelo y la preparacion del terreno para la siembra bajo lluvia simulada. Los resultados obtenidos confirman una relacion exponencial negativa entre la cobertura vegetal y la perdida de suelo; observandose que el efecto de raices es menos eficiente para reducir el proceso erosivo. Los mayores registros de perdida de suelo promedio fueron obtenidos en el cultivo de maiz y los menores para avena. Todos los cultivos mostraron una relacion negativa del escurrimiento superficial con respecto al aumento de cobertura vegetal; a diferencia del desarrollo de las raices, del que solamente el maiz mostro un ligero efecto en reducir el escurrimiento superficial.

Agroforestry has come of age during the past three decades. The age-old practice of growing trees and crops and sometimes animals in interacting combinations – that has been ignored in the single-commodity-oriented agricultural and forestry development paradigms – has been brought into the realm of modern land-use. Today agroforestry is well on its way to becoming a specialized science at a level similar to those of crop science and forestry science. To most land-use experts, however, agroforestry has a tropical connotation. They consider agroforestry as something that can and can only be identified with the tropics. That is a wrong perception. While it is true that the tropics, compared to the temperate regions, have a wider array of agroforestry systems and hold greater promise for potential agroforestry interventions, it is also true that agroforestry has several opportunities in the temperate regions too. Indeed, the role of agroforestry is now recognized in Europe as exemplified by this book, North America, and elsewhere in the temperate zone. Current interest in ecosystem management in industrialized countries strongly suggests that there is a need to embrace and apply agroforestry principles to help mitigate the environmental problems caused or exacerbated by commercial agricultural and forestry production enterprises.

Nutrient recycling, habitat for plants and animals, flood control, and water supply are among the many beneficial services provided by aquatic ecosystems. In making decisions about human activities, such as draining a wetland for a housing development, it is essential to consider both the value of the development and the value of the ecosystem services that could be lost. Despite a growing recognition of the importance of ecosystem services, their value is often overlooked in environmental decision-making. This report identifies methods for assigning economic value to ecosystem servicesâ€"even intangible onesâ€"and calls for greater collaboration between ecologists and economists in such efforts.
