This report provides results of a detailed study to determine the merits of selected premium design features for (a) flexible, (b) composite, (c) jointed plain concrete and (d) continuously reinforced concrete pavements. In addition, it includes an evaluation of the effectiveness of prestressed concrete pavements in relation to four types of pavements with and without premium design features. Based upon a thorough review of design procedures of the four types of pavements, the premium features that deserve to be evaluated were identified. The review study, in addition, identified the performance/design models in evaluating those features. Following a preliminary sensitivity analysis, the features identified were incorporated in pavement design trials. Based upon performance/reliability evaluations, and life cycle cost analysis using EAROMAR II computer program, the effectiveness of the respective premium features were evaluated. The results provide clear evidence of the economic benefits of many of the premium features which might be included in the design of pavements. finally, the performance of prestressed concrete pavements was compared with that of the other four types of pavements.

This synthesis report will be of interest to pavement design, construction, management, and research engineers, highway safety officials, and others concerned with pavement friction characteristics. It describes the current state of the practice and discusses the methods used for evaluating wet pavement friction characteristics of new and restored pavements. This synthesis reviews models used for measuring and evaluating friction and texture, causes for friction changes over time, and aggregate and mix design to provide adequate friction. Also presented are construction and surface restoration practices for providing good pavement surface characteristics. In addition, considerations of noise and ride quality are discussed when compromise may be required.

A comprehensive, state-of-the-art guide to pavement design and materials With innovations ranging from the advent of SuperpaveTM, the data generated by the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) project, to the recent release of the Mechanistic-Empirical pavement design guide developed under NCHRP Study 1-37A, the field of pavement engineering is experiencing significant development. Pavement Design and Materials is a practical reference for both students and practicing engineers that explores all the aspects of pavement engineering, including materials, analysis, design, evaluation, and economic analysis. Historically, numerous techniques have been applied by a multitude of jurisdictions dealing with roadway pavements. This book focuses on the best-established, currently applicable techniques available. Pavement Design and Materials offers complete coverage of: The characterization of traffic input The characterization of pavement bases/subgrades and aggregates Asphalt binder and asphalt concrete characterization Portland cement and concrete characterization Analysis of flexible and rigid pavements Pavement evaluation Environmental effects on pavements The design of flexible and rigid pavements Pavement rehabilitation Economic analysis of alternative pavement designs The coverage is accompanied by suggestions for software for implementing various analytical techniques described in these chapters. These tools are easily accessible through the book’s companion Web site, which is constantly updated to ensure that the reader finds the most up-to-date software available.

"TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 738: Evaluating Pavement Strategies and Barriers for Noise Mitigation presents a methodology for evaluating feasibility, reasonableness, effectiveness, acoustic longevity, and economic features of pavement strategies and barriers for noise mitigation. The methodology uses a life-cycle cost analysis to examine the economic features of mitigation alternatives, the FHWA Traffic Noise Model to integrate the noise reduction performance of pavements and barriers, and on-board sound intensity measurements as an input to the prediction model. The appendixes contained in the research agency's final report provide elaborations and detail on several aspects of the research. The appendixes are not included with the print version of the report, but are available online." --Publisher description.

The primary focus of this research was to determine the effects of design and construction features, such as overlay thickness and mix type, presence of milling, and type of restoration, on pavement response and performance and to establish their importance in the prediction of future performances of rehabilitated pavements. Long-Term Pavement Performance program Specific Pavement Study (SPS)-5 and SPS-6 experiments provided information to obtain a better understanding of the effects of design and construction features on pavement response and performance of rehabilitated flexible and rigid pavements.

The researcher developed correlations among flexural, split tensile, and compressive strengths and ultrasonic pulse velocity from laboratory testing using materials and mix designs proposed for use in a paving project. These relationships were used to review the current Virginia Department of Transportation specifications and quality control procedures for concrete used in the construction of rigid pavements. Correlations between compressive and flexural strength for project-specific materials and mix designs permit the use of compressive strength cylinders rather than beams for compliance testing. The relationships also provide a means for evaluating the quality of the concrete as placed in the pavement.
