Accidental fires occurring on-board Navy surface vessels create massive quantities of dense black smoke. To increase visibility and improve firefighting capabilities, appropriate technology is needed for clearing smoke from corridors and passageways. In response to this need, midwest Research Institute has conducted research to evaluate the use of charged water droplets (fog) for clearing smoke from a test chamber under controlled laboratory conditions. As part of this effort, a new type of charged droplet generator (electrostatic fogger) has been developed which is both novel in its approach and unique in design. The results of the study indicate that smoke can be visually cleared from the test chamber within 15-60 sec after application of the charged fog, with similar trends observed for particle number concentration. Also, the electrostatic fogger development in the study is superior in many respects to other devices of a similar capacity and, therefore, represents an advancement in charged fog technology.
