The developments of nuclear asphalt content gages were reviewed and gage operation and use were studied in the laboratory to determine significant parameters that may affect nuclear gage results. Two Troxler Model 2226 Asphalt Content Gages, serial Nos. 307 and 308, were used in this study. Parameters investigated were (a) asphalt content; (b) moisture content; (c) aggregate gradation; (d) interactions of (a), (b), and (c); (e) sample size; and (f) sample temperature. Precision and accuracy experiments were conducted. These included (2 sup n) factorial experiments and stepwise multiple linear regression analyses of the results. Asphalt content determinations equaling or bettering those of the conventional extraction technique were obtained in considerably less time.

The Troxler Model 2226 asphalt content gauge was evaluated in the laboratory and taken into the field where its results were compared to conventional reflux values. The precision as evaluated in the laboratory was found to be excellent - equivalent to .06% asphalt content with a 45 second count. The gauge does have to be recalibrated each time a different aggregate is used and as a practical matter should be recalibrated for each different mix type. Sample preparation is important and samples should be as uniform as possible. The accuracy appears to be as good as that of the reflux extractor. A recommendation for using the nuclear gauge is appended.

"This study was conducted to determine the feasibility of using a nuclear asphalt content gauge test procedure to measure the amount of asphalt in a bituminous mixture. A part of the vacuum and reflux test requires a moisture determination must be made; otherwise water extracted is shown as asphalt. Two advantages of using nuclear asphalt content gauges are: 1. Chemicals used in the vacuum extraction and moisture tests are very corrosive and consequently hazardous to handle. 2. The two procedures evaluated are simple and require less time than conventional procedures. Using these procedures may allow laboratory personnel more time for other duties. Results indicate the testing accuracy of the nuclear asphalt gauge when the temperature and density of the test specimen is controlled is at least as good as the vacuum or reflux extraction test procedure."--Technical report documentation p.

The Troxler 3241-B Asphalt Content Gauge is intended for rapidly determining the bitumen content of bituminous paving mixtures. A 300 millicurie Americuium 241: Beryllium source emits neutrons which are affected by the hydrogen in the mix. The affected neutrons are detected by Helium 3 detectors, counted and computed into a percentage bitumen of the asphalt mix. The current methods of determining the bitumen content of bituminous paving mixtures requires the use of potentially hazardous chemicals and several hours of testing time. When extracted aggregates are not needed, determination of the bitumen content of a paving mixture by the nuclear method may be easier, quicker and potentially safer. The objective of the project is to study the accuracy of the Troxler 3241-B Nuclear Asphalt Content Gauge in measuring the asphalt cement (AC) content of asphalt concrete mixtures produced with different asphalt cements and different aggregates.
