This study is part of an on-going program by Environment Canada to develop protocols to characterize AFBC wastes and to develop waste handling, disposaland environmental protection practices for AFBC solid residues produced atcoal-fired power generating stations in Canada. To date, the study has beenlimited to residues generated from the combustion of high sulphur contentcoals in limestone beds. The reactivity and exothermic nature of theseresidues, and the high alkalinity and total dissolved solids levels of theirleachates, are a combination of properties that are unique to these BC wastesin comparison to conventional combustion wastes. These residues, thereforerequire special consideration in the development of safe handling, disposaland environmental protection procedures.

In general, the results of this study confirmed the findings of the previousstudies. The results of the column leaching tests and field observations atthe Summerside disposal area, however, suggest reactions may continue tooccur over several months until the residues eventually solidify. Theleachability of these residues, therefore, may be overestimated if onlyconventional batch leaching tests are used. The results indicate that theresidues should be hydrated, dried (if necessary) to between 20% and 50%moisture, and compacted prior to final disposal in a landfill. This shoulddelay the commencement of leachate release from the landfill, descreasedisposal volume requirements, and decrease the leachate production rate. Itwould also allow the exothermic reactions in the residues to be completedprior to final placement. (Also see Microlog 87-00450.).

Two AFBC spent bed materials and one baghouse material were subjected to a variety of laboratory tests and analyses to evaluate their physical, chemical, exothermic and leaching properties.
