The Mandatory Building Inspection Scheme and Mandatory Window Inspection Scheme have been enforced in Hong Kong by the building authorities. All structural components, including structural sealants on buildings that are more than 30 years old, must be inspected and certified by a registered inspector. The Hong Kong building authorities require a safety factor of at least 5 for structural sealants, but the current test method, ASTM C1392-00, Standard Guide for Evaluating Failure of Structural Sealant Glazing, cannot help the registered inspector to determine the safety factor of the sealant on old buildings because it is not a destructive test in which the ultimate strength of the sealant can be found. To evaluate the structural performance of an aged structural sealant or to find out its safety factor, the ultimate tensile strength of the sealant must be found. The objective of this paper was to study the ultimate tensile strength of an aged structural sealant using a destructive test method. A site deglazing test and H-piece tensile test based on a modified version of ASTM C1135-05, Standard Test Method for Determining Tensile Adhesion Properties of Structural Sealants, were adopted for the evaluation process. Sealant samples were collected from four buildings with a similar age, approximately 30 years old, but the ultimate tensile strengths were found to be very different, ranging from 82.36 to 159.8 psi.

Cathedral Hill Hospital (the California Pacific Medical Center) is a 15-story building designed to be constructed in downtown San Francisco. The curtain-wall system for this building is primarily of unitized design employing a four-sided structural sealant glazing (SSG) system. This paper initially introduces the building and its curtain-wall design. Next, the summary of the results of full-scale racking tests on stick-built mockups of the curtain-wall system developed to evaluate the structural sealant performance are presented. Stick-built mockup, instead of unitized system, was chosen to initially evaluate the behavior of sealants under racking conditions. The mockups were designed to determine the behavior of the glass, framing, connections, and more importantly, the structural silicone under racking displacements following the AAMA 501.6 protocol. The test results (stress-strain relationships) on the structural sealant to determine tensile adhesion properties at selected temperatures and UV exposures are discussed and comparisons to the finite-element analysis results are presented. The wind load and seismic design of the sealants, including the finite-element modeling and analysis of a typical panel to evaluate the stresses in the structural seal-ants, are presented as well. The allowable stress issue in structural sealants for seismic design of four-sided SSG systems is discussed in light of the new information generated for this project.

More information about the capability and especially about the durability of structural sealant glazing (SSG) systems are needed. To make a contribution to unanswered questions, a suitable system evaluation test is necessary. The basis for such a test is a load function, which accounts for the decisive loads SSG systems are exposed to during their working life. This paper proposes a general load function for standard SSG systems at central German locations for accelerated durability tests. Decisive loads are determined and different SSG construction types defined. The performance of these SSG systems under exposure to external loads and to a dynamic pendulum impact is investigated via finite element analyses using a hyperelastic material model. The external loads are applied separately and superimposed. Compression, tensile, and shear deformations of the sealant are determined. It is found that the sealant is subjected to normal and shear stresses simultaneously. The requirements for a representative specimen are derived. The results will be taken as basics for the development and the construction of a test facility to evaluate the durability of structural sealant glazing systems.

Silicone sealants have been used since the 1960s as an adhesive to bond glass/glass and glass/metal constructions in facades and buildings, and a unique assembly type evolved around this time that came to be known as structural silicone glazing (SSG). In these systems the silicone sealant acts both as an elastomeric adhesive transferring applied glazing loads to supportive metal framing as well as a seal maintaining air and watertightness. Such systems offer numerous benefits as well as the opportunity of creating walls of uninterrupted glass and other unique aesthetic features without visual mechanical attachment of glazed elements. In general, the past 45 years have shown that the silicone sealants previously and currently employed have remained durable enough to maintain a healthy service life, but what is the actual service life of these systems? Because there is a life-safety aspect to SSG, a commonly asked question that demands continual study but remains elusive pertains to predicted longevity. Simply put: "How long can SSG systems last before replacement becomes necessary?" This paper provides information gleaned from numerous existing SSG installations from the 1970s and 1980s via field visits, extraction of structural silicone sealants, and subsequent laboratory evaluation of aged silicone rubber. Data were obtained through glass replacement works or from investigative inspection.

Silicone sealants have a long history of successful use in high performance windows and curtainwalls, such as structural glazing systems. With the recent threat of terrorist attacks, there has been an increased use of windows designed to mitigate the impact of bomb blasts. Due to the high strength and durability characteristics of silicone sealants, structural silicone sealants have been utilized in new bomb blast mitigating window designs. Effective bomb blast mitigating window designs allow the window system to withstand a moderate bomb blast without causing significant injury to building occupants from the blast itself or flying glass shards. The occupants are protected because laminated or filmed glass, which can withstand the blast, is attached in the framing with a silicone sealant. Silicone sealants provide unique benefits to these window designs due to their strength properties and their ability to anchor the laminated glass in the framing during a blast situation. In this paper, three commercially available high strength structural silicone sealants are evaluated at applied load velocities (movement rates) up to 5.0 m/s. These elevated load velocities are intended to simulate loads encountered during a bomb blast. Sealant joints are fabricated to evaluate the sealant in tension, shear, and combined tension and shear loads. Sealants joints are also exposed to accelerated weathering (heat, water, and artificial light through glass). Results show that the sealant strength values increase substantially at elevated rates of applied load. The paper discusses the effect of joint configuration, load velocities, and accelerating weathering on the performance and durability of the silicone sealants tested.

A simple and cost effective procedure is presented for in-service evaluation of the reliability of structural silicone glazed curtain wall systems. The field test utilizes a point load apparatus to simulate the effect of a uniform wind load. The analytical bases of the field testing procedure include selecting an acceptable failure probability for the structural silicone system, performing finite element analysis to determine the stresses in the structural silicone, selecting the magnitude of the point load that produces the same stress in the structural silicone as a uniform design load, and performing statistical analysis of the data. We present a test procedure, test results and analysis procedure for a hypothetical case.

The application of glass as a structural material may seem surprising initially, yet pioneering glass structures were first built two decades ago already. Ever since, Structural Glass has been developing at a very high pace thanks to very intensive scientific and industrial research and new technological developments. Right at the heart of these rapidly evolving developments, the European COST Action TU0905 'Structural Glass – Novel Design Methods and Next Generation Products' is active. With its main goals of unifying, harmonizing and boosting the ongoing developments in structural glass research, COST Action TU0905 frequently organizes international expert meetings and Training Schools, and supports scientific research missions. This proceedings volume of the COST Action TU0905 Mid-term Conference on Structural Glass offers a great insight into the latest developments in Structural Glass by means of more than 60 peer-reviewed papers by nearly 140 authors. Contributions cover all major topics in the field, ranging from in-depth material investigations to full glass structures and facades. As such, it represents an appealing work on this very young and dynamic field, and is intended for a global readership of researchers and practitioners, including structural and civil engineers, architects, material scientists, building consultants, contractors, material suppliers and product manufacturers, as well as other professionals involved in the design and realization of structural glass projects. The COST Action TU0905 Mid-Term Conference was held as a unique event, strongly embedded in COST Action TU0905 'Structural Glass – Novel Design Methods and Next Generation Products'. As such, it reflects the Action’s strong position as probably the largest Structural Glass research network worldwide, and disseminates the ultimate COST philosophy: true cooperation in Science and Technology.
