La douleur, sensation personnelle et individuelle, est une expérience complexe qui allie l’inconfort provoqué par une cause nociceptive à des modifications biologiques et comportementales, ainsi qu’à une perception consciente de celle-ci. L’incapacité animale à communiquer n’exclut pas la présence de douleur : soulager la souffrance chez les animaux fait donc partie des responsabilités du vétérinaire. Après une étude bibliographique sur les manifestations de la douleur aiguë chez les chiens et les chats, ainsi que sur les outils d’évaluation de la douleur en pratique, sont présentés les résultats d’une enquête sur la perception et l’évaluation de la douleur aiguë chez les carnivores domestiques par 548 vétérinaires et 216 auxiliaires français dans leur quotidien. Une forte proportion de vétérinaires et d’auxiliaires considèrent le traitement de la douleur comme primordial. Même s’ils se trouvent majoritairement efficaces dans leur gestion, la première limite évoquée est de ne pas reconnaître certains états douloureux, en particulier chez le chat. Les paramètres comportementaux sont principalement utilisés, ce qui est cohérent avec la méthode recommandée par les experts. Ces critères sont appréciés par les deux professions selon leurs préférences chez le chien et chez le chat. Les grilles d’évaluation de la douleur aiguë actuellement existantes sont généralement inconnues des auxiliaires et très peu utilisées par les vétérinaires. Au lieu d’en créer de nouvelles, il serait intéressant d’en faire la promotion par un simple affichage près des animaux hospitalisés et de rédiger une fiche-synthèse reprenant les éléments principaux apportés par la bibliographie.
