Arthur Dudley Vinton's 'Looking Further Backward' is a thought-provoking sequel and satirical response to Edward Bellamy's seminal Utopian work 'Looking Backward.' Set in the imagined future of 2023, the novel envisions an America subdued by a capitalist Chinese empire, diverging sharply from Bellamy's socialist paradise. Vinton's narrative, structured as a diary, skillfully combines political commentary with a storytelling approach that delves into themes of nationalism, capitalism, and imperialism. Its prescient reflections on societal ideologies and possible futures place it squarely within the tradition of socially conscious science fiction, making it a text of both historical and literary significance. Arthur Dudley Vinton, with a life spanning 1852 to 1906, was imbued with the political and economic theories that shaped turn-of-the-century America. Having been a lawyer, editor, and author, Vinton's multifaceted career likely informed his critical perspective on the rapid societal changes of his era. 'Looking Further Backward' seems, in many ways, to be a culmination of his lived experiences and intellectual musings, presenting a counter-narrative that challenges the optimism of Bellamy's vision and reflects anxieties about Eastern global dominance and unfettered capitalism. Scholars and enthusiasts of dystopian literature will find Vinton's work a compelling and insightful read. It invites reflection on the lasting consequences of economic and political ideologies that remain relevant today. The novel is recommended for those interested in exploring alternate historical narratives and the ideological debates that have shaped modern society. Its prescient treatment of geopolitical dynamics makes it a surprisingly contemporary read, despite its origins at the dawn of the 20th century.

An all-star gang of villains descends on peaceful Powder Valley On a tawdry street in the heart of Denver, men crowd into the saloon for two reasons: cheap whiskey and Connie Dawson. The loveliest singer in Colorado, Connie has a golden voice and a brassy personality, but along with a crooked preacher, a hotshot gambler, and the fastest gunman in town, she’s about to find herself in a whole lot of trouble. All four owe the sinister Judge Prink a favor—and he’s ready to collect. Prink has recently discovered the idyllic township of Powder Valley, home to Sheriff Pat Stevens and his faithful friends Sam and Ezra, and declared it ripe for the picking. With the help of his indentured gang of miscreants, he plans to strip the innocent little community bare. But when he meets Powder Valley’s courageous trio, Prink comes face to face with the law of the gun.

The Great Basin, a stark and beautiful desert filled with sagebrush deserts and mountain ranges, is the epicenter for public lands conflicts. Arising out of the multiple, often incompatible uses created throughout the twentieth century, these struggles reveal the tension inherent within the multiple use concept, a management philosophy that promises equitable access to the region’s resources and economic gain to those who live there. Multiple use was originally conceived as a way to legitimize the historical use of public lands for grazing without precluding future uses, such as outdoor recreation, weapons development, and wildlife management. It was applied to the Great Basin to bring the region, once seen as worthless, into the national economic fold. Land managers, ranchers, mining interests, wilderness and wildlife advocates, outdoor recreationists, and even the military adopted this ideology to accommodate, promote, and sanction a multitude of activities on public lands, particularly those overseen by the Bureau of Land Management. Some of these uses are locally driven and others are nationally mandated, but all have exacted a cost from the region’s human and natural environment. In The Size of the Risk, Leisl Carr Childers shows how different constituencies worked to fill the presumed “empty space” of the Great Basin with a variety of land-use regimes that overlapped, conflicted, and ultimately harmed the environment and the people who depended on the region for their livelihoods. She looks at the conflicts that arose from the intersection of an ever-increasing number of activities, such as nuclear testing and wild horse preservation, and how Great Basin residents have navigated these conflicts. Carr Childers’s study of multiple use in the Great Basin highlights the complex interplay between the state, society, and the environment, allowing us to better understand the ongoing reality of living in the American West.

Rivertime written by Mary A. Hood and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-03-20 with Travel categories.

In this engaging travelogue of our world's rivers, great and small, poet and biologist Mary A. Hood reflects on rivers as creators of place. Recounting her journeys along portions of the Mississippi, the Danube, the Amazon, the Yangtze, the Ganges, the Nile, and a dozen small U.S. rivers, Hood weaves together natural history, current environmental and conservation issues, encounters with endangered plants and animals, and tells some interesting tales along the way. Like a river, the book begins small, with essays that are narrowly focused on themes of environment and place, such as the need to write our world (Three Rivers), how fires (and corporations) control the West (the Flathead), the effect of wind farms on a small town in western New York (the Conhocton), the giant redwoods and how they were preserved (the Klamath), and the search for moose in the great north woods (the Penobscot). The second section expands the themes of environment and place and looks at great world rivers, their long histories, their biological diversity, the effects of human use and tourism, and the paradox of human reverence and destruction. From endangered species to invasive species, from corporate control of national parks to wind farms, from urban sprawl to efforts at conservation and restoration, RiverTime offers insights into our relationship to the environment in the twenty-first century.
