Chance is necessary for living systems – from the cell to organisms, populations, communities and ecosystems. It is at the heart of their evolution and diversity. Long considered contingent on other factors, chance both produces random events in the environment, and is the product of endogenous mechanisms - molecular as well as cellular, demographic and ecological. This is how living things have been able to diversify themselves and survive on the planet. Chance is not something to which Life has been subjected; it is quite simply necessary for Life. The endogenous mechanisms that bring it about are at once the products and the engines of evolution, and they also produce biodiversity. These internal mechanisms – veritable “biological roulettes” - are analogous to the mechanical devices that bring about “physical chance”. They can be modeled by analogous mathematical equations. This open the way of a global modeling of biodiversity dynamics, but we need also to gather quantitative data in both the laboratory setting as well as in the field. By examining biodiversity at all scales and all levels, this book seeks to evaluate the breadth of our knowledge on this topical subject, to propose an integrated look at living things, to assess the role of chance in its dynamics, in the evolutionary processes and also to imagine practical consequences on the management of living systems.

These guidelines focus on the often complex links between biodiversity and sport. As many sports events depend on a healthy natural environment, it is critical that the environment is not harmed. Outdoor events can have a range of direct and indirect negative biodiversity impacts which may include damaging natural areas and disturbing sensitive species. Physical impacts come from modifying areas, compacting soil, trampling vegetation, and accidents such as fires. Pollution may be caused by litter, fuel and chemical spills, or wildlife disturbed through increased noise, lighting or simply the presence of people in sensitive areas. There have also been cases where invasive species from outside the area have been unintentionally introduced to a venue. Biodiversity impacts can also go beyond the event venue and affect species and habitats some distance away as a result of waste disposal, water and energy use, sourcing practices and travel. The significance of these impacts differs depending on the type of sport being hosted, the size of the event, and when and where it takes place.The guidelines highlight that sports events can also benefit biodiversity. Each event offers an opportunity to raise public awareness of the value of nature and influence attitudes towards biodiversity and its conservation. There is the potential to reach large audiences, at the event and via press, broadcast and social media, as well as through advocacy by athletes and sponsors. Setting an example in the way the event is delivered and drawing attention to the flora and fauna in and around the venue can encourage more people to appreciate nature and support conservation efforts.

Although 'biodiversity' is a relatively new coinage, scientists have been studying the subject it describes long before the word's first appearance in the language in the mid-1980s. In 1973, for instance, the UK Systematics Association held a symposium on 'The Changing Flora and Fauna of Britain' which concluded that not enough attention was being paid to the conservation of rarities, a conclusion also reached, said the symposium, at a meeting of the Linnaean Society some forty years earlier. By 1980, the Global 2000 Report to the President published by the US Council on Environmental Quality starkly warned of a diminution of up to one-fifth of all species by the turn of the century, and there is now a growing consensus that the world faces a 'biodiversity crisis' - a potentially catastrophic global loss of genetic, ecosystem, and, most obviously, species diversity. Indeed, especially since the UN Convention on Biological Diversity was promulgated in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, conserving biodiversity has become the principal focus of the global conservation movement. Indeed, the study of the origins, maintenance, and protection of diversity has become perhaps the most vibrant offshoot of ecology and conservation studies.
